I suspected and hoped this wouldnt happen. We have far too few African links now from LHR. I was hoping Virgin Nigeria would maintain and grow their prescence at LHR now it looks like being downgraded to LGW. Dont tell me they are even using an A300 now?

You are both aware that the Virgin Nigeria flights from LGW are in addition to the Virgin Atlantic LHR flights aren't you?

The winter timetable sees daily LHR-LOS flights operated by Virgin Atlantic A340-600 (VS651/652) and 3 weekly LGW-LOS flights operated by Virgin Nigeria A340-300 (VK292/293)

With the very limited number of slots available at Heathrow, running the Virgin Nigeria flights from LGW seems entirely reasonable given their own daily services remain at Heathrow.

I would like to have seen Virgin give some of their slots over to the 'national' carrier Virgin Nigeria in order to give the airline the best possible start on which to build.

Amadeus shows only LGW through to May... with VS sticking to LHR.

And thank god it does not show an AB3/6!

Is that even possible? They are both basically the same airline.

Ha! Isn't that "similarity" something they are trying to distant themselves from? They are wanting to present VK as a Nigerian-dominated airline.

well from LGW, Virgin Nigeria can coordinate via a SPA with CO on their LGW-EWR and LGW-IAH flights...2 v imp markets in USA for the LOS market.

I don't think VK has any agreements with CO, tickets will be quite expensive using 2 carriers that don't have any agreements

Just to clear up, VK is not completely owned by VS or SRB. They have a 49% stake but VK is controlled by Nigerian interests. Hence we may not necessarily see much cooperation between the two airlines, and VK may not enjoy the codeshares VS currently has.

Moreover, what's been said on this thread in fact does indicate that VK are moving ops to LGW if VS are in fact competing. And as for A300s, well it's the african way...

I don't know that they are, however it's quite possible because it is so hard for an African carrier to sustain funds in order to keep relatively modern equipment. I was merely musing but who knows...

For some reason it seems like African carriers do well out of LGW. ET recently started flights to LGW in addition to it's LHR flights. For the winter season ET usually had extra flights to LHR but this season, LHR flights have been cut back to 3x a week, instead of 4x a week and 5x a week during x-mas. Instead for the x-mas season LGW will receive the extra flight to London. ANy reason for LGW being a success for African airlines?

LGW is a lot cheaper to fly to than LHR, particularly if you sell an LHR slot to move to LGW.

That doesn't seem to be the case Crosswind. VK's website only offers LHR until some point in late November, so clearly no codesharing or anything. Just LGW service.

Actually the code AB3 refers to the standard A300B4 and AB6 to A300-600.

However deckchair always gets these wrong and they also show SK, LH and most other A340 flights as the same AB3/AB6 code so this in no way means that VK are getting the A300, just a typical error in their system which cannot distinguish between different airbus widebodies.
