Interesting. If and when the AM-CO codeshare becomes effective, CLE could be an interesting destination for regularly-scheduled service. Don't you agree?

Any clue if AM will use 73W's?
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

WOW, AeroMexico in CLE.... sounds like a 737 route. Will Aeromexico be the first foreign carrier at CLE?

Wow how cool is this! Even if it is a 737 it is great news for CLE, though it will not be the first foreign carrier as our friends up north have been sending flights down for years.

This isn't "AM's team". AeroMexico simply got a good contract to operate a charter flight on behalf of Funjet. This has nothing to do with their route planning team.

No. Air Canada flies there, and other foreign airlines have in the past, including JAT.

Air Canada has been here for years.

CO operates one non-stop to CUN on Saturdays. There is no non-stop back to CLE.

This route might be a new AM's route don't you think? I can't understand your point of view... If you have something against AM routing plan or Mexicans Airlines in the USA.... well who knows... as I told cheers to AM's team and the new route that AM has IN IT OWN PLANE TO CLE!!!!!!! (No matter if is on behalf of Funjet or whatever......)

About JAT flt CLE was only for a short term a destination of that disappeared airline, they had flts to DTW and ORD and JFK and YYZ as well, but they doesn't exist anymore and AM YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, it exists and soon will be landing at CLE airport.... how wonderful and great NEW DESTINATION...... btw Saludos

It's not a NEW SCHEDULE ROUTE, this are just charter operations and probably the first of several to come from AM or MX considering TMA's departure which had a strong operation at CUN and CZM.

I have nothing against CLE or Mexican airlines in the US. That is ridiculous, why would I? I am just telling it like it is. Funjet vacations asked for bids to operate Cancun-Cleveland, and AeroMexico won. It doesn't have to do with AeroMexico's route planning department or the people at AM saying "hey, let's fly to CLE". It is about getting a lucrative charter contract.

JAT used to operate DC-10s to the US quite a while ago. I think it was in the 80s and early 90s (I could also be easily wrong here), but when I was a kid, I remember some flights had a stop in LJU.

Nowadays JAT don't have any widebodies in their fleet anymore.

I can clearly see MAH4546´s point here. Indeed, the CLE operation is a temporary arrangement, and depending on how competitive AM stays during the exercise, the contract could be renewed or switched to another carrier by Funjet.

On the other hand, what´s the market base in CLE that could sustain an scheduled operation by AM, MX or even Azteca and Aviacsa ?

This charter is because TMA/Trans Meridian stopped flying. Funjet needed to find another provider and it boiled down to who had planes available to run the charters.

Probably not that strong. The thing is that, when it comes to flying to Mexican resort cities, Americans are more inclined to fly an American airline. Hence, when you look at the route maps of airlines between the US and Mexico, you see US airlines doing more resort flying and Mexican airlines doing more VFR/business-aimed flying. Look at how few Mexican flag carrier routes there are between the US and Cancun, for example. MX to LAX/MIA and AM seasonally to JFK/ATL/MIA.

I highly doubt it considering the small number of mexicans living at CLE! Years ago I live for 3 months at CLE and saw very few mexicans during my stay!

Interesting that AeroMexico would fly a charter route, though.

AM has done charters for years. Most likely you will see the rotation as CUN to CLE to CUN! So they will not have to base crews here or over night the aircraft. Not always the favorite for passengers as they feel they are losing time in the destination, by flying down late in the day and returning early.

A lot has changed since JAT-Yugoslavian Airlines last flew intercontinentally to the US.
For one, the concentration of the Serbian population has dispersed from their predominant areas of the Northeast and Great Lakes; following the sun like everyone else to warmer climates out west.
Serbo-Croatian (US Census does dileniate between the 2) populations in Maricopa (Phoenix) and L.A. County have surpassed the traditionally large enclave found once in Cuyahoga County (Cleveland).

Cook County Illinois (Chicago), followed by Queens County New York (NYC) are still by far the #1 and #2 largest Serbo-Croat communities in the US followed by L.A. and Maricopa counties.

This information based on Census data which asks "Besides English, what other languages are spoken at home?"

So Phoenix eh? Maybe the new US will start nonstop PHX-BEG service someday!? (just kidding guys...calm down.)

Good question. I doubt there are enough Mexicans with enough money to vacation in CUN anyway. Most don't even have passport! Everybody I know (both of them) fly to FLA and take a cruise ship. I don't see the demand. Besides, you can't even find a decent mexican food resturant any where within Cayuga or Lake counties! Went to "Don Tequila's" in Painesville last Thu.,supposedly good, no way.

P.S. The Chinese food sucks as well.

One thing AM and MX have to do in order to grow and become stronger is to learn the in-style business rule "WIN TO WIN". This means that both airlines have to create several new routes to the hubs run by partner airlines in other countries. Don't think of them as feeder airlines in a bad sense. They have to become feeder airlines in a matter of win to win.

As a matter of fact, it is often cheaper to fly to Cancun and have a full-all inclusive week than any other domestic destination within the US.

And why would they need a passport to ENTER their country? Specially if coming from the US, where it is accepted to LEAVE (and re-enter) provided the passenger holds a birth certificate and a picture ID.

Aeromexico to CLE sounds like a good charter flights to the Northern Ohio area. AM service is also quality something you wont find from a charter flight company. As to routes from AM to CLE I find that not possible, AM or other Mexican carriers look for business destinations, or destinations where mexican nationals live in such as cities out West. If AM is to expand in the US look for them to try and go to markets they don't serve yet where other mexican carriers have a strong hold. The only place in the Midwest with strong mexican airline presence would be Chicago. AM has service in NY, BOS, ATL, DC, PHL. Also KevinI1011 I wanted to respond back to your comment you said in your post, CLE is not a market for AM to attract local Mexicans, Also I am Mexican-American and I can afford to travel 3X a year to MEX from OAK and 1X to Europe( So I guess I don't fit the stereotype). CLE to me is still a mid-size airport. CLE doesn't rank with the likes of JFK, SFO, ORD, ATL, DFW.

Restaurant review from a "gringo"-- Nuevo Acapulco on Lorain Rd. is a great place with good food and atmosphere, fairly close to Hopkins, and makes the closing of Chi-Chi's at Great Northern easier to take.

Cleveland historically is a city built with an influx of Western, Eastern and Southern European immigrants unlike its California counterparts adjacent to Mexico. Though most sections of Cleveland have had a demographic shift in the past 50+ years, you can still see vestiges of the German, Polish, Italian (etc.) influence on the city and greater Cuyahoga County. Enclaves like Little Italy on Murray Hill still cling to their historic roots. A good reference guide is "The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History" by David Van Tassel and John Grabowski.

When I lived in Cleveland I remember JAT -Jugoslovenski Aerotransport- coming in to Hopkins with a DC-10 on certain days of the week, and departing for Belgrade via Detroit where they picked up more pax and the runways were longer than Hopkins 8998'. (Unlike the Continental Boeing 757-200's which depart for Gatwick, the DC-10-30 at or near max gross is a bit of a groundhog.)

Hard to take a suggestion for a Mexican restaurant from someone that considers a Chi-Chi's closing a bad thing.
