Smart move, as one of the few European countries or capitals without any meaningful LCC services. Surprised they haven't added a couple of Scandinavian destinations on there, such as Copenhagen - although perhaps the charges are putting them off, or they are trying to avoid stepping on finnair's toes too much on their key routes.
Just when I thought I could see light at the end of the tunnel, it was some B*****d with a torch bringing me more work

If Sterling announced CPH-HEL, SK's and AY's gloves would come off, and they would start behaving like children, kicking and screaming, as usual when a core market gets new competition. And they would, as usual, succeed.

Cheers

Sure, we're concerned for our lives. Just not as concerned as saving 9 bucks on a roundtrip to Ft. Myers.

Best Western - from what I can make out, your information about this (and your BMI A330 stuff earlier) comes from articles published on Air Transport Intelligence. I think it's only fair that you credit the source rather than just print it here unattributed.

Any news about who will be the handling agent at HEL?

This is interesting, as they will compete head-on on several routes with Finnair, as well as with CSA, Air Finland and Malev. We'll see...

But on different markets. Finnair lives from transfer-traffic between Europe and Asia plus local tour operator groups, Sterling from individual O&D.

I usually remember to source it like I did regarding the BD aircraft choices. I rarely quote from the ATI website as they are usually 24 hours behind airliners.net with the information as they add value to the information with editorial comment on the events. However this came from a Sterling press release (via a Finnish colleague), and is now on the sterling website.

Sterling are investing in the 737-700TM variant to actually start the route in tha past.

Sterling operated charter/IT flights from Helsinki for many years with their 727-200s. Good to see them back at Helsinki.

Anyone fool can post an unsubstantiated rumour, with no in-depth information. In my opinion most of the genuinely useful information on A.net is just nicked from other news sources who've got it first. That's why a source identification is courteous.

I fully agree. Thats why I subscribe to RATI. Its an excellent resource and well worth the subscription. However all news must come from somewhere.

Stefan Vilner knows what he's doing, and saw Buzz's failure to compete profitably in Helsinki first hand when he worked at Go. London will come eventually - probably to Gatwick.

It's a huge start for a new carrier - eventhough Sterling has had charter traffic from Helsinki earlier. They are not only competing with Finnair, but also with Air Finland, who is flying with their 757-200s at least to

Rome
Prague
Budapest
Barcelona
Nice
Malaga

This can only mean that someone is going to step aside next spring ...

Well, perhaps no-one has to step aside. Oslo (OSL) has both SAS Braathens, Sterling and Norwegian operating the same destinations and are doing very well...all 3. But then again it seems like the market for nonstop flights from Norway to Spain is quite big.
