Goodbye FAA Flight Service

Wed Oct 05, 2005 11:42 am

Today marks the first day that Lockheed-Martin will take over duties of FAA Flight Service Station Controllers. I would just like to send a thanks out to all the AFSS Controllers out there who lost their jobs due to the contracting. You guys have served the aviation community well and you wont be forgotten. Sad to say, but I believe this is a precedent that we as controllers will soon be contracted out. Contracting my never an option. Thanks for all the help you have given me in my flying and for being nice when as a student ATC we call up and totally F'up the weather form! Thanks again, and I hope you all find a good life in your future careers or retirement.

Are they hiring aircraft dispatchers for some of the slots?

Flying here in Grand Forks - i was talking to "John" at the Grand forks FSS, his last night as a federal employee, sorta sad once i thought about it, especially being above north dakota at 10PM, thinking somewhere down there this guy gave all he could and is getting fired. i dunno, just a moment i guess.

life wasn't worth the balance, or the crumpled paper it was written on

Do you know how this will change the actual service, or will it still be the same only with different employees? We use PMSV, but FSS every now and then.

Just the ghosts of progress I guess. Sad to see such hard working people that are relied upon for sometimes life-or-death matters get thrown to the wastebasket in the name of better efficiency.
And all at once the crowd begins to sing: Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same

To All FSS employees whom I have contacted over the years:

Thank you for your patience with me at the beginning of my flight career. Thank you for the many updates you gave me inflight over the years. Thanks for helpin' me avoid bad weather back when I flew a Beech Sport. Always nice people everywhere I have flown and wish the best for 'em.

Thank you,

-D.K. Crawley

I'll miss calling up here in southern New Hampshire and getting "Baaaaaaaaaangor Flight Service!" Hopefully Lockheed Martin can do just as good a job as the FSS did. I must say, though, the Bangor ones were the friendliest that I talked to.

The younger employees will probably get hired on by Lockheed.. The older ones will be retired.. They will probably take a pay cut and the quality will decline along with the wages.. Maybe after this decision kills a few people the government will reconsider.

They older guys have the option of getting picked up with lockheed, but those that are in 20-14 years, why would they. At 25 they are eligible for their retirement. The FAA basically said screw em (those near retirement age).

Today I called thm twice from the tower with our hourly weather reports, when the lady asked me what Wind: VRB@06 meant, the supervisor and I about lost it. (for those who arent weather inclined, it means Variable). This, coming from a so-called weather "professional". I wont say anything about the FAA (since I want a job someday), but jeez... worried
