Jetblue @ EWR Opening Day! (Many Pics - Slow Load)

Thu Oct 06, 2005 3:09 am

Hre you go! The van that you see is "Blue Betty" she travels across the country on tour spreading jetBlue fever.

The first flight EWR-FLL was full and departed early.

The blonde reporter was smoking.

Enjoy!

Hey, thanks for the awesome pictures! I counted seven flights on the departure screen. I'm willing to bet they'll triple the number of flights within a couple of months. Great to see them in EWR!

Thanks all.

One funny thing that I forgot to mention was when one of the first gentlemen speaking (i believe the head of the port authority) introduced Dave Barger as the COO of Continental Airlines (instead of COO for jetBlue) everyone started laughing anf he turned about 8 different colors.

Oh Boy...wonder who/what was really on his mind!

Also crewmember's that I was talking to there said tons of other airline employess are pulling them to the side on a daily basis asking how they can get a job. Including continental employees.

Shows you how happy they are their their jobs I guess?

Wow! JetBlue serving all 3 NYC airports, now we truly are NYC's hometown airline.

Much luck to, well, us!  Smile

HAHA the second B6 announces service to ISP, I'll be booked on the inagural flight and I will be calling to inquire about job openings. I would love to work for WN at ISP but I don't know if there are any openings. I would drop out of college just to work at ISP!!

Thanks for the super hot pictures!

That Jetblue's "trailer" exhibition bus is cool and the seats look nice. I was supposed to be on the Newark inaugural flight, but class conflicts... but I am glad that you are able to take some super nice pictures.

yes, Jetblue is still making those destination posters -- I got one for the Portland inaugural flight and the Burbank ones too.

Good luck Jetblue!

Frank Lautenberg and Sharpe James were present. I wonder how much money they shook down JetBlue for. Its a bad omen having those two there.

Anyway on a serious note I want to welcome JetBlue. Good luck with your venture into EWR. Its a great airport. Looking forward to the competition.

I hope B6 realize that centralizing operations at JFK is not the most strategic measure that can be taken.
The launch of services to/from EWR was a great step to B6 better serve NYC and region, and besides expanding those services, the next step should be the start of services to/from HPN.

Ok, I love JetBlue. In my opinion, one of the greatest airlines in existence. but I have to admit . . . they are THE darling of the industry!

There is even a press release about this on the Port Authority website!  Smile
http://www.panynj.gov/

Think about how many carriers start and end service at EWR! Few get a press release unless it is for extraordinary service such as EWR-HKG.

Move over CO! The PA has a new favorite!

Yeah, the press coverage was disproportionate to the event:

Airline serves Orlando and Fort Lauderdale from New York area! film at 11.

Stop the presses! Local airline increases flights to overserved markets by adding third local airport, adding less than 3% to capacity to those markets for New Yorkers.

Sure, it's interesting, but it's not like the Pope visiting.

Someone's got a stick up their...nevermind...

The reason why they get all this press is because:

1. It's JetBlue
2. It means more options
3. It's JetBlue
4. It means lower fares
5. It's JetBlue
6. It means Continental has some serious competition
7. It's JetBlue

Everyone was there except Senator Corzine, all the other Politicians (all Democrats) mentioned him in their remarks. Senator Corzine is running for NJ Governor, Richard Codey is acting Governor who is doing a fantastic job IMO. Governor Codey has brought dignity back to the Office, I hope Corzine wins the Governor's race so he can appoint Codey as US Senator for NJ.

Last Friday Governor Codey sealed the Stadium deal with the Jets and Giants, brand new stadium in the Meadowlands with a rail link connecting with Hoboken and Secaucus Transfer.

They new stadiums naming rights will be sold to the highest bidder, the NFL is going to contribute $300 Million to build a retractable roof so the Meadowlands can host the Super Bowl.

Also this week they finally broke ground on the Newark Arena, the new home to NHL Devils and possibly the NBA Nets if the Brooklyn deal falls through.

2. Slightly
3. It's why there's press
4. True for some pax, not for most
5. That's my point
6. It could help send a huge employer at the airport into BK, if B6 gets what they want, what a great day for the region...
7. It's overhyped

I think B6 is great. I just don't see why this is that big a deal, other than the POLITICIANS want to be connected with the cool airline that has a positive image.

Thing is, CO has already cut fares and change fees on the routes. And again, B6 is not opening up a new route or a new city to the area. They are adding barely any capacity to an already overserved Florida market where people want to/expect to fly for free.

This was "newsworthy" but not at the LEVEL that it has been covered.

When they start serving new destinations out of EWR, then i think it's more newsworthy.

JetBlue will never touch our true cash cow markets, hell, the money we make off EWR-TLV might be enough to float the hub by itself!

Continental owns Newark, and an incursion by B6 is nothing more than a novelty. Sure, we will compete on fares and routes, but they could never achieve the critical mass at EWR to become a serious thorn in our side. There simply is not enough room at EWR to get it done, and if there were, B6 would have been in Jersey long ago. This is simply to cater to their existing (strong) NJ/Manhattan customer base and grow the brand to areas previously inaccessible.

Continental respects B6 as a competitor, but in this case we are simply too strong on our home turf to lose. I'm not saying we will drive them out of town, but don't look for a duplication of their success at JFK by any means.

Yea but Florida has a never ending load of PAX ready to fly and ever since B6 came and helped lower fares, more people come. It is not overserved because all the flights still fill. When airlines flood the market just to keep another carrier out, then it gets ridiculous. Plus B6 has got the Tv and the great customer service. In all the interviews with David Neeleman he always says, "Sure there is the TV's but our customer service is great and that will bring PAX back" (something along those lines). Plus it is jetBlue in NY and adding NY-Florida for more Ny area people, sure it will get coverage, evryone loves jetBlue (except some people-not you personally I am talking about a green bunch). But B6 was built on Ny-Florida so adding more Ny-Florida is big. By Thanksgiving they will have 76X Daily from NY-Florida!!!!! That is more than anyone else. So it is pretty big.

"Serious competition"? More like a mosquito to be swatted.  Smile

The overhype on this is just hysterical! Even for NYC!

It was like when WN came into CLE with 12 flights a day, and, watching the news, you think they had started with 120 flights. It was overkill, and CO just kinda chuckled at it in the background that day.

AA, DL, UA, NW, US also serve all three airports. Some even serve MORE than ALL three.

And so adding 10 flights a day brings them to 76x from NYC, competing with the 100s of direct and connecting flights to Florida from the NYC market, and again, those 10 amount to maybe 3% added capacity to an overserved market!

The fact that if you keep lowering the price to below profitability (see B6s future forecasts), you can get more people to fly is not new. We all know that. And as I said, growing up in New Jersey, most people want to and almost expect to fly to Florida for free.

All its done now is bump up fares on florida routes not served by B6, routes I have to fly living in Los Angeles since I don't need to go to Fort Lauderdale.

Yea but waht these airliens do is they have like LGA for East Coast, EWR for domestic and JFK for interntaional, while B6 who is quaoted as New Yorl's hometown carrier, serves there money-maker key routes from all 3.

jetblue to FLL: DEC 22, 2005
JFK 14X (2184 seats) LGA 5X (785 seats) EWR 5X (785 seats)= total 24X daily...thats a lot...=3754

Song: 8X JFK (1592 seats) 3X LGA (597 seats)=2179

AA: 3X LGA (420 seats)

NK: LGA 5X (690 seats)

CO: EWR 9X (1557 seats)

US: 2X LGA (240 seats)

U5 1X EWR (174 seats)
so B6 clearly dominates!

Quoting JetBlueAtJFK (Reply 30):
Plus B6 has got the Tv and the great customer service.

I have to admit, the service on CO is better than B6..friendly, 2X even on FLL and a "real" snack...even if it is microscopic...I really enjoy it.
NEXT FLIGHT: FLL-ATL-HPN on FL

Competition on these routes is a good thing, Jetblue is going to push the yearly travelers through EWR by 1 Million passengers. CO with their lower fares and increased sevice will also dramatically increase the number of passengers flying through EWR.

With this new service B6 will have 76 flights to Florida from EWR, JFK and LGA, CO with their increased service will fly 52 flights to Florida from EWR.

I believe that makes CO the # 2 carrier in the NYC-Florida market in terms of daily flights, however when it comes to daily flights from one airport I believe CO has the same number of flights to Florida from EWR as B6 does from JFK.

From yesterday's Star Ledger:

Expectations soar just as JetBlue arrives in Newark
Port Authority says passengers will top 1 million in 15 months

BY JOSEPH R. PERONE
Star-Ledger Staff
JetBlue Airways, which begins flying out of Newark Liberty International Airport today, is expected to serve more than 1 million passengers by the end of next year, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The airline is projected to handle more than 250,000 passengers this year, and more than 1 million by 2006, inbound and outbound, Port Authority Chairman Anthony Coscia said yesterday. That would make the carrier the sixth-largest airline operating at the airport, ahead of Northwest, based on passenger figures for July, the latest numbers available.

"JetBlue's decision validates to other carriers that Newark is a premier aviation facility," Coscia said.

Newark has long been the quintessential hub in the hub-and-spoke air system created by so-called legacy airlines to transfer passengers from small markets to big ones. But now, the airport is trying to diversify with discount carriers that serve routes nonstop.

JetBlue will inaugurate service today from Newark to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The airline will add service to the Florida destinations of West Palm Beach, Tampa and Fort Myers on Oct. 19, and to San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Nov. 17.

"Our research shows that customers are willing to travel from as far as Philadelphia to Newark to use our service," said Todd Burke, a spokesman for JetBlue, which got its start flying out of John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Quote:
Newark still does not have the king of all discounters, Southwest Airlines. Southwest serves some southern New Jersey passengers from its gates in Philadelphia.

"My sense is that eventually Southwest will fly out of Newark as well as Philadelphia," said Coscia, the Port Authority chairman.

Port Authority officials also have held discussions with Virgin America, a part of Richard Branson's air travel empire, which plans to offer domestic service in the United States. Virgin America, which declined to comment, is based in San Francisco and has been searching for an East Coast airport for several months.

Newark has had little discount competition because Spirit Airlines and Song, a unit of Delta, no longer serve the airport.

I hope Corzine wins the Governor's race so he can appoint Codey as US Senator for NJ.

Uhh, last I checked was that US Senators are voted in by the people of that state, they are not 'appointed' by a govenor.

They are appointed by Governors should the seat be vacated before the term is over, should someone retire or die the Governor of the State from which the US Senator is from has the right to appoint a new Senator until the next election.

Jon Corzine is going to leave the Senate early to become Governor, should he win he will then appoint someone to finish out his term.

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
The Seventeenth Amendment provides that vacancies in the Senate, however they arise, may be filled by special elections. A special election for a Senate seat need not be held immediately after the vacancy arises; instead, it is typically conducted at the same time as the next biennial congressional election. If a special election for one seat happens to coincide with a general election for the state's other seat, then the two elections are not combined, but are instead contested separately. A senator elected in a special election serves until the original six-year term expires, and not for a full term of his or her own.

Furthermore, the Seventeenth Amendment provides that any state legislature may empower the Governor to temporarily fill vacancies. The interim appointee remains in office until the special election can be held. All states, with the sole exception of Arizona, have passed laws authorizing the Governor to make temporary appointments

Did Jetblue and ATA take over some of United's old counter space? I can't believe how small the lobby in EWR is! PDX must be four times bigger. I hate to see that place when it's busy.

Today CO's first 3 flight EWR-FLL are almost sold out,

501 21/151 out of 24/159

1401 18/144 out of 18/149

1801 16/151 16/156

Wow!!! B6 kicked our butts the second morning 18 seats not sold.

All of us on this board have enough common sense to know that high load factors do not equate to profits. While CO's flights may still be going out full, their yields have certainly fallen. Going from charging $99 to $69 certainly does hurt.

BTW, no one ever said that CO would lose business because of JetBlue's entrance. The routes will simply not take in as much revenue as previously.

CO and B6 will live peacefully at EWR, the true winners are the travelers and the airport's workers and store owners whom the increased traffic from B6 and CO's expanded Florida flights will bring more oppurtunity.

The Port Authority had big plans for Terminal A, they are planning on re-doing the Terminal and Concourses just like Terminal C. However those plans were put on the back burner when traffic dropped off dramatically after 9-11, instead they are spending $300 Million to continue the renovations at Terminal B which began in 1996 with the opening of the new IAB and Arrivals Hall.

With the industry rebounding and the growth associated with B6 and the extra CO flights they are going to launch the Terminal A redevelopment probably sometime in '06, it will be launched along with the redevelopment of LGA's Central Terminal and it's concourses which will be totaly replaced by much more modern and roomier concourses.
