Thu Oct 06, 2005 6:32 am

i have noticed that United had several of wide body operations at sky harbor.
when did they operate those, and do they still do that?

I don't know what they did in the past, but in the age of TED the only scheduled UA birds you'll see in PHX are A320's and a few CRJ's. Since the 744 photo is fairly recent, maybe there is a MX provider who operates there? Could make sense if those birds had been in storage somewhere in the desert, they could have taken a short hop to PHX to get cleaned up to be returned to service... or vice versa.

The 747 is likely a divert or a sports charter. I don't think UA ever had scheduled 747 service into PHX. Only carrier, besides BA, that did in recent times was NW with 1 or 2x daily during the winter to MSP.

Most UA widebody service was either with the DC-10 or domestic 767-300s. All to Chicago. Pre-9/11 peak 1-2 of the 6 daily ORD flights was a 67, the rest were a mix of Airbii and 757s. LAX, SFO, and DEN were all Shuttle 737s, with IAD being an A320.

Given that the 747 pic was shot in January, I would be willing to bet that it was a Fiesta Bowl charter. And if it was returning from the desert it would make more sense that it would head to LAX/SFO were UA has large MX bases.
