UAL @ RDU & GSO!

i know after 9/11 UAL pulled full service out of RDU. GSO still has full service last i checked. How come on UA into RDU? is the GSO market that much better? Is it b/c RDU has more airlines flying in? What the deal with that? RDU has more pax why no UA and only UX?

While this question is out there...

Are there any rumors about any new airlines/destinations being added? It's been so long since RDU has gained anything.. and the loses are just depressing.. somebody please know something..

With the current state of the industry I would not expect much of anything at RDU for the near term with the exception of jetBlue. Long term expect to see growth that matches the population.

Lets not start a RDU vs GSO vs CLT war here.. I was just wondering because it seems that there has been a lot of subtractions and very little additions.. I can't see how demand could be declining with passenger numbers increasing.. course the overcapacity flag can be thrown.. I just think it is odd.. someone has to have something in the works and I'm just wondering who and where..

One of the big things with RDU that GSO doesn't have to contend with is American. AA has 5 M80s a day on RDU-ORD; AA has nothing on GSO-ORD. Many people in the RDU are loyal to AA...they have a sizeable O&D operation out of there which I'm sure leads people in that market to choose AA over UA on that route. In GSO, there isn't any non-stop competition, so UA uses mainline to probably cover some of the demand. Now, if AA did decide to fly GSO-ORD on a few CRJ-700s a day, I would not be surprised if we saw UA pull mainline off the route and replace it with their own CRJ-700s/EMB-170s.

actually MQ operated ORD-GSO but it was pulled after 9/11 (as well as their LGA-GSO run)...UA actually had 4 jets a day to ORD even with MQ competing...2 727's and 2 733's if i remember correctly....of course now it is just the 2 735's and 3 regional jets...
if it means no AA on the ORD-GSO route to keep UA mainline here im all for it....although STL-GSO on AA would be nice... Wink

AA now has at least one daily MD-80 DFW-GSO-DFW along with the ERJ's

However, it would be nice to see some ORD service of some sort.

Passenger numbers are down at GSO lately. This is mostly due to AirTran pulling out...so now GSO doesn't have as many cheap flights as they used to...so now the people from CLT that used to drive to GSO for cheaper flights don't drive there anymore..they fly out of CLT.

Living in winston-salem, I'm flying home via CLT for christmas since a flight to SPS was about $125 cheaper from CLT. Also, long term parking at CLT is only $3 per day, and it is $5 per day at GSO.
