Air Luxor To Be Renamed

Sat Oct 08, 2005 6:30 am

Air Luxor of Portugal (LK/LXR) is to announce its new trading name on October 11th.
The bad reputation gained by Luxor Air of Egypt (LU/LXO) seems to have been damaging for Air Luxor's business.

In fact, I was wtill confused about them until I had readed an article in AW.

I was always wondering what the European flag was doing on an egyptian carrier?  Wink

But the carrier is great on what I know now!

Same here!! When AW came in the mail I was expecting an article on an Egyptian airline!! So IMO a good move to change the name. Here's hoping for a cool name (please not air** or **fly) and a nice new colorscheme.

Ah the most famous airline in Portugal for starting new routes and dropping them a couple of months later.... still I'm pleased the name is going, as everytime I came close to selling anything on LK pax always ask if it's Egyptian. Apparently the owner named it after his favourite city (luxor) but I was never able to confirm that. Maybe they will rename it after something Portuguese. Any suggestions? And no, you may not call it "Air Mateus Rosé"

I think it's about time Air Luxor changed it's name!

I wonder what It will be?

I would love it to be Portugal Airways or Portugal International

Will the a/c receive new paints or just new titles?

Air Luxor confused me also, I thought they were Egyptian. I was even more confused to see one of there A332's in SYD a few weeks ago. It was bound for Fujairah (FJR), a resort on the Arabian Sea coast of the UAE. No stopover was listed but I don't believe the trip could be done without one, 7424 miles according to great circle mapper.

I personally think that Luxor Air of Egypt should be the one concerned about a possible negative association with Air Luxor than vice versa.

I really hope that they don't end up putting Portugal anywhere on the fuselage of its fleet.

As a Portuguese citizen I would be very embarrassed buy this move as their reputation is really bad.

On a side not I would love to see Air Luxor and PGA Portugalia merge creating a larger network for both airlines. With Portugalias outstanding service + Air Luxors fleet and international roots they would become a strong alternative to Tap.

We always assume that businessmen types make good, well informed decisions. Imagine a Portuguese airline being named after an Egyptian city. How brainless is that?

Let's hope the new name makes a bit more sense.  Yeah sure
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Quite right, Babybus.
My understanding is that Air Luxor founders wanted a name related to high quality, to the idea of luxury. Hence the strange name of Air Luxor as I suppose Air Luxury or Air Luxus was difficult to endorse.
Extract from Air Luxor's website:
"As the aim was to provide high quality, personalised executive air transport service, the keyword was luxury and so Air Luxor carne into being."

I understand that they are not a well executed airline. But I have to say that they adopted the A330 where right now the Portuguese national airline, TP, is dreaming for. So I give them some credit for at least trying. Air Luxor must face some political pressure for competing with TP and having to deal with the poor airport management (ANA) in LIS. I am sure its not an easy environment for any new airline. So I give some credit where its due.

A name change is needed and yes many here think it was brainless but whatever it is... they are correcting it.

As with TAP Portugal I really wonder if their new livery and marketing strategy is also brainless? What is wrong with having a modern but still maintain its traditional and classic "Air Portugal". I dunno... only time will tell.

Just a little history on this.

Air Luxor exists for a long time. Their initial core business was the private jets.
Only in the last 5-6 years or so Air Luxor entered in the charter market and later with some regular flights in Europe.

They bought a few A320's, 2 or 3 old L1011's, and 2 A330's. At this time there were lot of rumours about how they were able to get the money to grow their fleet so rapidly, when the aviation market was decreasing.

Also, there was a story of them owing the airport fees to LGW airport and the airport authorities didn't allow them to take off until everything was paid.

I was told sometime ago that they were owing a lot of money to TAP related to maintenance. Last year 1 of their A320's went to TAP (Cs-TMW) and more recently (CS-TNB), not sure if this was part of an agreement to pay their debt.

And to finalize, there's the case that happenned in Venezuela, where a plane (citiation X) chartered by Air Luxor to a private portuguese businessman, had 2 pax carrying about 450kgs of drugs. The ladies are in prison in Caracas as well as the co-pilot from Air Luxor.

I've travelled with Air Luxor once, from Dublin to Lis. Except for the fact that I didn't have enough legroom, the flight was ok and the service was normal.

Quoting BoeingBus (Reply 20):
Air Luxor must face some political pressure for competing with TP

I'm not sure to what you're referring to, some government intervention is related with some routes to the portuguese islands. People that live there have reduced fares to travel (the rest is supported by the government) if they fly in the company designated by the government. Tap has been choosen because they have a better structure in place to guarantee this regular flights.

Quoting BoeingBus (Reply 20):
having to deal with the poor airport management (ANA) in LIS

That will be equal for the rest of the airlines....unless they don't pay....

Hi!

When this topic came, it imediatelly came to my mind the beautifull L1011-500 that is still at AMS!!!! People can say that it doesn't belong to them, people can say that belongs to an "airline" called Luzair, etc. etc.
They can rename the airline but I personally don't give a lot of credit to them! Also there is going a big strange situation here with a Citation X that is impounded at Caracas and the sister operator that Air Luxor have, NetJets, is strangely keeping the silence regarding this matter too. I forgot to tell that the Citation X was impounded because there was drugs on board! Once again very strange all this!

Netjets Europe was somewhat of a partnership between Air Luxor and Netjets. That is the main reason its headquarters (legally, anyway) are in Lisbon.

I did a quick search in Modified Airliner Photos and came up with these two results. The Air Luxor colors look excellent on the B787. Too bad Boeing had to turn this beauty into one ugly plane.

Who is online
