PTV's In Air China 747's

Sun Oct 09, 2005 3:41 pm

I am fying to Beijing this upcoming July. I am wondering if Air China has PTVs in their economy seats. If not will they be getting them soon? And if not what do they show for features on their inflight movies. If they don't can you have a personal DVD player on board. I heard somewhere that they dont allow them on board.

Hi Sean,

I recently came back from Beijing on an Air China B772 and there were no PTV's but inflight entertainment was nevertheless quite good. There was a mixture of English & Chinese documentaries/films/news programs etc... Take a good book as well and you'll be fine!

The legroom was excellent - more like Executive Economy and the overall service was ideal. I had my laptop and IPod with me and there was no problem using them, so I don't suspect a personal DVD player would cause an issue either.

I'd fly Air China as a preference for my next trip to China.

Enjoy Beijing!

Also another question. Are there outlets in the seats on 747's? I have never been on one. The largest one was a Delta M11 and it was not so good so i wouldnt know. Like if there are onboard, are they near a window or on the armrests or what?

I have flown with Air China ( business and first class) on the SFO-Beijing route on average three times a year. There are no PVT in economy and it is hit or miss in Business class. There are personal PVT in first class. CA is undergoing a $70 Million upgrade in their business/first class seats and first class sections.

Air China is a pretty basic beast. The leg room is good at 34". The chinese food is plentiful and tasty (avoid chinese breakfast unless you like congee). Service is ..... well they try their best but their english is not always that good so there is ample room for confusion. They don't serve spirits, only soft drinks (beer counts as a soft drink!). The cabin is a bit tatty even on the newer planes with duct tape etc patching up armrests and the like. IFE is definately hit and miss. The sound quality can be poor and unreliable, you'd be better off with your own player, no power points though. On my flight they were showing I Robot which I thought was good. Half way through they showed the inflight health video. when we returned to I Robot they hadn't stopped it so we missed the middle half hour! The 747 and 777 are similarbut the 777 does have a nose camera for takeoff and landing.
Overall as I say pretty basic, butif you take your own entertainment and anything you might need you should be fine. a bit like a US domestic carrier but without the service.
PS this was on flights LHR- PEK and domestically
