Sports Teams Planes

Tue Oct 11, 2005 6:56 am

With the Yanks playing in Anaheim tonight after both teams flying across the country to get to Orange County for today's game, it got me thinking as to what planes sports teams fly on.

Does anyone know if most sports teams have their own planes, do they charter out commercial airlines planes and then retrofit them all with first class. I know some of the basketball teams have their own planes, but was curious if anyone has any insight and/or pics of sports teams aircraft.

(Sorry if this is a duplicate posting, could not find the thread anywhere)

I think they use Charter companies not commericial airlines. I have seen a 727 parked at Midway with the Texas Rangers Logo on it when they were in Chicago playing the Sox. I know the Chicago Bulls used a 727 but don't know if they owned it.

The Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers used to fly Pace, who used to do the charters for a number of pro teams. These days, the Hawks and Thrashers fly on Midwest (The irony there being Delta is the official airline of both teams.). The Dallas Mavericks own a 757 that Pace operates for them; The Seahawks and the Trailblazers share a 757 their owner bought, the Miami Dolphins have a team-owned 737 as well.

The 737 you are talking about, although painted in Dolphins colors, is not for the team's use...it belongs to the owner, Wayne Huizenga, who has a freakin' airforce of private aircraft...a 737-200, BBJ, Gulfstream, and a helicopter which he uses to fly to home games at Dolphins Stadium...there is a helipad in the parking lot there for this purpose...these aircraft are hangared at FLL when not in use...The Dolphins do not use Wayne's personal aircraft...

You probably know that last night, a CO 757 flew the Yankees from LGA-ONT, and a DL 757 flew the Angels from LGA-ONT.

Bob,

Did not know that...but thanks for the info.

Do you know if the planes were special charters with reconfigured seats, or just regular planes??

The aircraft typically are not reconfigured, although if I understand correctly nobody will occupy a middle seat in coach and often folks will have their own set of seats. The 757 is a good aircraft for this kind of trip because it typically has a large f/c section when run by the majors as these two are.

I don't have any special knowledge about these particular flights however.

A regular private jet won't do, because they're too small. So I guess they charter either BBJ/A319CJs or commercial aircraft. I like the way American clubs have personalised planes painted in their colours. You don't see that often, outside the states.

I would love to see a plane painted in my team's colours: Yellow fuselage with two black stripes, black tail, and "Itti-Jet" emblazoned on the sides. That's a dream plane Big grin

The Detroit Red Wings and Tigers have their own airplane, DC-9-51 N682RW. There are many pictures of this aircraft on a.net. It doesn't have a standard interior, but I am not exactly sure what the layout is.

Midwest reconfigures their planes for sports charters. They include video tape players for the Bucks coaches. They also have the front fow of seats facing the rear of the plane, and have fewer rows of seats on those planes.

The Steelers use a US 752 or 762 when the 762 is available.
