Santa Barbara Leases Air Comet 747 To Fly CCS-MAD

Tue Oct 11, 2005 9:50 pm

Santa Barbara has decided to retire the DC10 from its fleet. The beautiful 3-holer has been retired from service in Venezuela in a rather sad way. No water cannon salute, no special ceremony. Instead YV-1052C had an engine failure 30min after departure from CCS and had to perform an emergency landing. The DC10s will be replaced by 767s.

Santa Barbara expects to have the "new" B763s in operation by October 29th. Meanwhile they will lease a 747 from Air Plus comet to fly 4X weekly between CCs and Spain

Saludos desde Caracas,
Luis

Would that be a former AR 742?

Good news indeed !
But I guess the flights will be operated by A7. Will there be S3 cabin crews on board as well ( I know the main tripulation has to be from the operating airline) ?

Where is that information from ? I can't find it anywhere...

Something else came to my mind now: does A7 have a 747 available the whole week to operate the full S3 schedule ? I doubt ! How could they afford to leave such a plane on the ground ?
I think they will probably only operate 2, maximum 3 weekly MAD-CCS-MAD rotations.

And BTW. the GDS shows all S3 flights MAD-CCS closed (fully booked) until the end of the year - and no more flights from September on....

What did they do with their passengers that had already booked for X-mas ? Are they "on hold" ? What do they tell them ?

Even if they pick up 763s that remarkably fast---Oct 29th?---how could they have crews ready to go that quickly?

Probably that's more than enough. The 747 can occupy many more pax than the DC-10...

Anyways! Second time in Venezuelan history that an airline operates a 747!!!
OFCOURSE, VIASA WAS THE FIRST ONE...

Is S3 going to paint the AC!!!??? If they will, I'll go down to the airport to check that out!

Hi guys,

When did YV-1052C have the emergency? I flew to CCS this weekend and saw it heading out on Friday. I flew back to MIA on Sunday and I did not see it....
On a side note I did get to see LH's A343 taking off to Frankfurt...I have never seen a longer take off roll in my life! I thought it was going to hit the drink! And talk about a sluggish climb! Underpowered, I've heard...

So it looks as if I was right. According to El Universal today there will only be 2 weekly services:

Wednesday: MAD-CCS-MAD and
Friday: MAD-TFN-CCS-TFN-MAD

They are talking about four weekly flights but obviously they are counting them oneway.

http://noticias.eluniversal.com/2005/10/12/eco_art_12208C.shtml

Poor passengers that booked on days that are not served any more and are rebooked to other days...
Flight status in GDS remain the same.

Let's hope this works and they get the 767 soon....although I must admit that I prefer the 747.

Crews usually perform derated takeoffs when the weight, runway and atmospheric conditions allow. It means they'll use less takeoff power and that translates into more runway used before liftoff. The A340 doesn't have a great takeoff performance but it's not that bad either.

Once I downloaded (and sadly afterward lost  Sad ) from a spanish aviation page a video about an A340 taking off from OVD to JFK. I am almost sure it was a trip to celebrate "El Dia de la Hispanidad", an October 12th. (Just like yesterday). And besides, it was a very special flight for several reasons:

1- I think it was the first and last flight from OVD to JFK till now
2- OVD only runway is only 2.200 mts. (6700 ft)
3- Spain's Prince (For us the spanish, Principie Felipe and Principe de
Asturias) was travelling in that plane, but I believe the plane was full of
periodists and authorities.
4- The plane took off in less than 3/4 of runway. (There was not much margin
either)

I am sure that the presence of Prince Philip in that plane and the length of the runway created the conditions to really see how an A340 performs in a state of non-economical priorities, and those who could see the video (as I) could get a more exact idea of that plane's capabilities.
variety is the spice of life; that's what made the "old times" so good

I really doubt this. The only way it may work out is with a wet lease, they go to convert into their operation, once ready. The pilots are not the only thing to arrange. Behind the walls there is much more going on to make an aircraft fly. Finally they need to present their documentation about the operation and the authority needs to approve this. You can be sure and certain, it's a rather hard job to find an authority on the world, which is able and will to approve a complete 767 ops within 17 days, just in case they would present the documents today what is for sure not possible. Remember, this authority is probably not that much favoring Santa Barbara Airlines, as the authorities "big boss Hugo" likes more Conviasa.

Quoting Edhugo (Reply 15):

Absolutely true and actually what the companies want us to do. What is done, is basically apply only the power needed to comply with the available runway lengths. Sure, the crews would like to go full power.

The A340 is a four engine aircraft. Covering the "one engine out case" is still a three engine situation. Much better than ending up in a one engine situation if one fails, as it happens on A330's as on any 767, 777 or other planes. For this reason the twins need to have much more power in excess than a three or even a four engine one. For this reason the twins perform that "sporty" on a normal, all engine take off. If you are interested, you may check out this link:

http://adg.stanford.edu/aa241/performance/climb.html

Apart from this the A340 is a long range design, what is not really in favor of the take off and climb either. A long range wing is designed to cruise for a long time, but not really to climb, meanwhile a short range wing is not that fast in cruise, but better on climb. Look at the nice swept wing of a 747, just a dream  Wink.......and still making it to be one of the fastest civil airplanes

I'd like to go down to the airport to check it out... I bet it should be nice.... However, it's going to be an old a/c, right???

OK, so I just checked GDS. Flights MAD-CCS are available again from 1st Nov. But it still shows the DC10.
And the schedule is the "old" one. Means they are selling seasts ex MAD on:
Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Only the Sunday seems to de closed out as all classes on "0".

This means that - if press release is correct - they need to rebook the passengers to the existing flights on Wednesday and Friday. So why the hell they start selling the other days again today ?

What!? So are they still flying the DC-10 or there's a charter a/c doing this job?

According to local newspapers and news, those jets were grounded...

This is getting tricky... Let's look for some more info.

Where will the B767 come from? Will they be operated by Santa Barbara pilots and crew? How will they adapt to a new a/c type in just one month? I believe it should be a longer ACMI/wet-lease...any news on this appreciated.

Like I mentioned in another thread, B767 needs ETOPS approval. That's not going to be easy for them

Just checked: this aircraft is an ex-Air France plane delivered in June 1980 and in service with Air Pullmantur since March 05.

They are not the same, but I think they're owned by the same parent company. Air Pullmantur focuses more on charters/vacation inclusive market, while Air Comet Plus operates the scheduled services.

I think the chose this 747 for capacity issues. They've a lot of passengers in CCS and MAD and they have to move them as fas as they can.

Hopefully it will be temporary.

767s adapt better to market situations regarding this routes...
