It's my understanding that a few 744's and the early 340-3's are leased but the rest are owned. Don't quote me on that either. Now CO, they don't own $hit. Singapore I think owns each and every aircraft they currently have.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi.
For Virgin according to JP
Some A-340-300 are lsf ILFC, Debis, Airbus
Some B 747-400 are lsf ILFC, GECAS
Singapore Airlines
only 9V-SFC a 744F is leased from CA.

Are the plans funded by other debt such as loans from banks etc instead of leasing contracts?

Likely. It is rare that an airline funds an aircraft purchase purely in cash. UA did that notably when they wrote checks for 2 744s in one day, but that is the exception rather than the rule

Unfortunately Virgin does not publish annual accounts and any information as to which aircraft they own and which they lease seems to be a classified top secret, as well as any information about loans that the group has taken out to fund aircraft purchases. However, a search through the records of aircraft leasing companies show that VS is a customer or ILFC, GECAS, DEBIS and Airbus Leasing. This could be construed as an indication that the majority of their fleet is leased as opposed to owned outright.

Somebody with insider's information might be wiling to disclose the ownership of VS's aircraft?

@BCAL

judging from the JP (don't know how reliable it is in that case) the majority of their fleet is not leased.

The entire VS fleet is in fact leased. As stated above this is from a variety of sources. I do not have the exact information to hand but ILFC provide a large proportion of the B744 fleet, specifically the earlier models (G-VFAB, G-VHOT, G-VBIG, G-VAST, G-VTOP). I believe that the A346's are all leased from airbus leasing and the B747-443's are leased direct from boeing. The A343's are leased from a variety of sources.

VS used to own the majority of its B742 fleet. The RB211 aircraft were bought "cash" from NZ and CX. I believe (this is only from memory so don't quote me!) the total figure for the aircraft, a few spare engines and some other spares was $135m. Technically three of these are still owned by VS but they are slowly being pulled from Mojave and sold to Transaero.

No.

VS owns 4 of its 744. GECAS and ILFS owns respectively 5 and 4.

They also own most of their A346s, except 4 leased to ILFC, one owned by Babcock and Brown company.

As for the A343, they own one, leases 3 to ILFC, 4 are owned by Airbus Financial Services.

The information I have is actually internal VS documentation. The remaining B744/A346 are apparently leased direct from the manufacturer. Perhaps this does not technically count as a lease but VS certainly do not own them as far as I can see
