Lan Chile New Airbus Order

Wed Oct 12, 2005 8:19 am

I was reading another forum that LA just placed today a new order for 25 A320 plus 15 options for delivery in 2006.

According to article, this makes a new total of 59 frames of the Airbus 320 family order by LA; does anybody has the exact breakdown?

Can someone confirm?

Wooh!
So, many more beauty a/c for south american airlines! Very nice!

They'll compete with TACA for the newest-aircraft ailine, very nice... Hopefully, Venezuela will be in that competition soon!

Supposedly A319s and 20s powered by International Aero Engines V2500 A5 (don't know much about engines, I just copy/pasted the name, lol). According to the article I read, they will be used for domestic flights within Argentina, Peru and Chile.

Btw, how many engine types does LAN fly on their A32Xs? I know they became the launch costumer for the PW6000, but what did they fly before? Are they adding yet another engine type?

Sorry if this is a load of BS, don't really know much about engines/engine manufacturers....

Cheers

We have to give LAN a lot of credit, what a great airline. I'm guessing their new Airbuses are to replace their -200s.

Well LAN has these engines in their fleets

B737-200: PW JT8D-17Rs
B767-300: PW PW-4060 (not sure but i th8ink this is the powerplant they use)
A319: IAE V2500-A5s.
A320: IAE V2500
A318: PW-6000
A340-300: CFM56-5C3

Hope this helps

Lan has and uses on their Boeing 767-300 fleet both types of engines.

Pratt and Whitney PW4060

General Electric GE CF6-80C2B6F and B7F

Correct, that is what the articel states to replace the aging 737-230adv's.

The article says the aircrafts will be for all the LAN Group: in Chile, Argentina and Peru.
It is logical as 25+15 airplanes will be too many for a single airline. The 737-200 will be replaced by the A318!!! Which is a very good news, indeed. The small Airbus is getting more and more orders.

What's the reason behind ordering PWs for their A318s? Does IAE not have a suitable engine for the type?

No, their engine is too big (weight and thrust) for the A318. I think the PW6000 was going to be the only engine choice on the A318 as its low weight and superior fuel consumption significantly improved the A318's economics. However, PW had so many problems with the engine that Airbus offered it with the heavier CFM-56 as well.

Indeed, LAN is the very first customer for the A318 with PW6000s.

From what I've read this is NOT a new order, but a confirmation of an order announced last summer.

Thanks, PPVRA. The Airbus press release confirms that this is a confirmation of a previous order. Just curious as the intitial post in this thread cited a "new order".

Quote:
LAN Airlines ("LAN") with headquarters in Santiago (Chile) has signed a contract with Airbus for the acquisition of 25 A320 Family aircraft plus 15 options. This order confirms LAN's previous announcement of June 2005 and brings their total orders for Airbus aircraft to 59.

I'm sorry, thought it was a new order but now we know it's only the confirmation of a previous order!

But still pretty impressive what LA is doing, of course it's now LAN, but behind it's the one we used to know as Lan Chile with profitable subsidiaries in closer territories and this new frames will sure make LA stronger. Interesting will be to see how LA play it's cards and perform in Argentina!

Hmm it all depends on how the cover of the book is seen.

For me the most important is the biggest... the one who get to carry more pax in a year... and that title at least for 2004 went to RG followed by J.J, AM, MX and I'm not so sure but I think AV was first or ater LA, AR, TA, 6A, CM!

In terms of fleet this is the ranking (jets only): AM, RG, J.J, MX, AR, LA, AV, G3, 6A, TA, CM.

In terms of service, probably LA goes first followed by J.J, RG, MX, AV, AR, AM.

Ricardo, when I say "maybe be is the best" I assume people think about the in-flight service. But even when we speak their network about, LAN serves 4 continents (OZ, North and South America, Europe) Even their Cargo division, LanCargo, is pretty large, on that way LAN has cargo planes (767F) and for instance, IB has no one ...sadly

Its not a suitable replacement for the 732 on most routes. The only suitable replacement there ever was was the 735.

Now, the Embraer 190 and 195 are the best replacement. The A318 is tooo much plane.

I am sure LA will avail themselves of the range and payload of the 318.

According to my own opinion, I go on thinking the best replacement for the 732s can be an A-318, especially if you already have others A320-family aircraft in your fleet. And of course, the Embraer is a very good airplane as well.

Not exactly. Well, they did have problems with the engines (too much fuel consumption), but the reason Airbus also offered the CFM is Air France, they demanded that engine for commonality with the rest of their a32x fleet.

A little surprised not to see anything on the 2 A340's they still have on firm order. Any news on these?

They plan to increase the AKL/SYD route to daily in late 2006, and only have 4 A340's, they need atleast 1 spare.

However having freighters doesn't not necessarily mean they are better or haul more cargo. I'm sure IB haul's more cargo in a year at their bellies than LA. It's a strong fleet of 30 widebodies + 100 narrowbodies vs. a short fleet of nearly 45 planes (including F's)!

yeah, there is something behind this eternal delay, I think. The 767 order just placed won't suit well the EZE-MAD market, and the current 340s are full. I do think LAN will HAVE to make a wide body announcement soon, 343, 346 or, if God wants to, 777s!

There is no official date for the delivery of the remaining 343s. I bet they'll change them for more 320s family, as they did with the 7th 343 a few years ago. Remember that in 2000, when they ordered the big bus, they got an option for another 14.

Rumors about LAN complaints about 343s are countless, although I asked a pilot once and he told me it was OK, it was a 340 pilot, of course
