Monarch Air 757 Engine Fire

Hi everyone,

I just read on the german website www.web.de, that supposedly an A343 from Monarch Air had an engine fire right after take off from Malaga en route to MAN. I thought Monarch Air didn't even have any A340's. And in the article they talk about one of the TWO engines catching fire. Does anyone know anything about this or is it just crap like I'm thinking?

Don't quote me on this but..

Had an engine explosion after take-off, shut down the engine, and made a safe emergency landing.

First day of operation back at MAN for a while, it replaced G-MOND, which had trouble on route to AGP last week.

I've got G-MONE replacing G-MOND on the 8th? Going off on a tangent, what happened on Monday with the A320s? Came home, saw MON534A "arrived" from LTN on Ceefax but than heard this aircraft (MRJK) operating to ALC instead of PMI?

Correct G-MONE did replace G-MOND on the inbound from AGP after the decompression, which caused G-MOND to divert to LGW.

But what I meant was that G-MONC and G-MOND are 219Y config, the rest of the fleet is 235Y.

On Sunday ZB572 was operated by G-EOMA
Monday: G-DAJB
Tuesday: G-DAJB
Today: G-MONC

G-MONE is the charter aircraft doing to flight to Rhodes today as MON7782/7783

G-MONC replaced G-DAJB which I think postioned down to LTN, and G-MONC passing it coming the other way.

MON534A - ZB534 is the outbound for the PMI flight. G-MRJK is at LTN now, it swapped with G-MONX

We have G-MONX, G-MPCD and G-OZBK as our A320's now

So it was a 757? What the hell do they say Airbus for? Plus, they put this ridiculous picture of an A346 on the article.

G-MONC had an engine surge on departure out of AGP (runway 14). Crew decided to shut down the affected engine (due high temp) and return to AGP and landed safely on runway 32. Engine will be changed in AGP.

Well done to the crew.

Wonder if the age of the 757s were a factor? I know Monarchs 757 are pretty long in the tooth some dating back to 1983 and they have seen very, very heavy utilisation on charter flights since their introduction. Over 20 years now of very high cycles.

I know Monarch is renowned for its engineering and maintanance but I cant help thinking these 757s may cause increasing amount of maintanance and technical delays in coming years.

I am sad about this as I fear Monarch may well phase out the 757s altogether in favour of more of the 321, which is the nearest modern alternative capacity wise, even though it cannot operate without payload restirction to some of Monarchs destinations (GIB springs to mind)

The 757 has been a real workhorse for Monarch and is a hard act to follow. the 321 has less capacity and range and isnt nearly as elegant as the 757. Hope they get the 757s sorted and they stay with MON for a few more years.

Nothing to do with it. The 757s are amongst MONs most reliable aircraft (I believe the 320s may be the least reliable?)

Glad to hear it. I love the 757s. I get scared that many of our charter carriers are abandoning them slowly in favour of the 321 which isnt as flexible as the 757 in what it can do.

Monarch have deployed the 757 on transatlantic charters in the early years with the airline and have been a good workhorse for them.

Gkirk,

Don't know how you got that piece of information but it is not true. A320/321 is the most reliable aircraft in our fleet. 757's are getting old but as long as you perform proper maintenance than this is not a problem.

Age of the airframe has nothing to do with this incident. Because the airframe is 20 years old doesn't say the engines are 20 years old. And even if they are there is a maintenance schedule for engines as well. After so many hours/cycles they will be removed and send to RR for mayor overhaul. You will get an engine back with all its hours/cycles rest to zero.

Seems that a replacement engine has been despatched from LTN this evening. Does anyone know if Monarch Engineering will carry out the engine replacement at AGP, perhaps dispatching a crew and using the facilities of a local airline such as IB, or will the replacement be handled for ZB by an AGP-based company/airline?

Monarch Engineering have a Summer base out there, next summer an A320 will be based there. But I assume that some Engineers will fly out too.

I flew on G-MONC to SZG from LGW back in 1988 - my first B752 ride - it was great - they still look in good nick - even now!

BTW accoring to G-INFO it had 70,704 hours on it at 31 December lasy year - does anyone know how many it needs to get to until a major overhaul? Thanks.

Well the saying that bad luck comes in threes is true for ZB over the past week. First they had the precautionary landing at LGW last Saturday following both engine bleeds/sudden loss in cabin pressure in either their 757 G-MOND or an A321 (depending on which report you believe), then this incident at AGP, and according to an unconfirmed rumor on pprune a ZB aircraft requested firebrigade for a landing at ATH yesterday.

Before anyone starts slagging ZB and their "old" aircraft, remember sh%t happens. ZB has an excellent safety record, and their aircraft are well-maintained . Monarch Engineering also undertakes regular maintenance for other carriers, including well-know scheduled carriers.

There was also a diversion to ATH on a MAN-CFU, October 7th, A320.

Knock on delay was 2 3/4 hours for the Barcelona next morning, which yours truly was delighted to endure in the black hole of Terminal One at MAN.

Given the number of hours, some ogf these planes might need to be replaced in the new future, but there is nothing to stop them acquiring newer B757's second hand.
