Latest CI @ JFK News, And Qustion...

Fri Oct 14, 2005 11:09 pm

FINALLY!!!

Starting on Oct. 30th, China Airlines will move to Terminal 1 at NY's JFK International Airport. Terminal 1 is the newest terminal in JFK, with a lot of windows (Although won't make much of a difference due to CI's JFK-TPE flight time) and very spacious main lobby.

They will move from Delta's terminal (Terminal 3), which is old, dark, and just down right depressing. Although CI has a codeshare agreement with DL, they can still provide good connection service between terminal 1 & 3 with JFK's Airtrain.

I hope with CI's move to a world class terminal, it can start to get some well deserved recognition as one of the world's top airlines. Now... if they'd just get new seats in their 744s, and replace their older 744s with 747Adv and start JFK-TPE non-stop, I'd be happy!

Ofcourse, if the Taiwanese government get their acts together and start to allow direct flights between Taiwan and China... TPE can serve as a very busy gateway to all the major cities in China, as well as the rest of SE Asia it already serves. HEY! I can always hope...

Trex8 (or anyone),
Do you know if CI is putting in the new seats and IFE on their 744s with the installation of Connections by Boeing?

P.S. It is kind of ironic that China Airlines (Flag Carrier of Taiwan) will share the same terminal as Air China (Flag Carrier of China

Wouldn't this honor go to T4? Or is that considered a renovation and reconstruction? I know that the old Eastern terminal was demolished and a whole new terminal was built, where as T4 was done in parts. Did all of T4 eventually end up getting demolished and replaced (in pieces of course)?

Actually, that's not true but T1 is certainly newer (nicer) than T3.

T4 was a complete redo . . . it was just demolished in sections to allow use of the old terminal and new terminal while construction was going on.

I watched in built for four years. Very, Very interesting how they did it.
At one point, they were using the original terminal with the new concourse. It was connected by an elaborate mess of temporary walkways.

Very cool. www.jfkiat.com thats all the info on T4 u can ever want.

T1 was a lot easier to build. Eastern went under and the building was thrown down.

T-1 was built in '97, T-4 and AA's new T-8 have come since so I don't know where they came up with that info.

Thanks Michael. What I should/meant to say/clearify is that T1 is the newest "Entirely new built" terminal. I believe T4 was renovated, not completely rebuild.

In any case, any terminal in JFK is much much better than T3. They should just tear that building down and make a parking lot out of it.

I think AA's new terminal is entirely new built as well. It's not finished yet, but all domestic, and some international, flights depart from it.

That said, I totally agree that anything is better than Delta's terminals.

T4 is enitrely new as well, just built in sections/stages to allow usage of the old IAB while the new sections were built. It is not a renovated terminal. Trust me, if you ever were in the old IAB and then new T4/JFKIAT you'd know that there's no way it could be a simple "renovation".

Very true. It's like night and day between the old IAB and T4. T4 is simply quite awesome, spacious and well lite. Now if they can tear down and redo T2, T3, T6 and T7 at JFK then that airport would be great!

Now, does anyone know if CI is putting the new seats and IFEs on their exisiting 744s?

Their IFE system won 2nd place in 17th Annual Avion Awards, sponsored by World Airlines Entertainment Association (WAEA). Want to try it out, but they don't send their newest 744s to JFK... Don't know why... -___-"

T2 and T3 are the only remaning crappy terminals at JFK. And frankly, Terminal 3 is fun. It is old, dark, and nasty but there is no other terminal in the USA where you can get that Pan Am feeling like Terminal 3.

Terminal 6 has been extensively renovated and is quite nice now, except the baggage claim area. Terminal 7 has been heavily renovated in the past few years as well, and in my opinion is the nicest terminal at JFK.

See that's what I don't understand, the Pan Am World Port to me is way more impressive and historic than TWA's former T-5. Yet T-5 gets all the accolades, Pan Am got the first 707s, 747s, the Beatles etc..

There is another. You can hop up to LaGuardia and take a stroll around the Marine Air Terminal. I believe it still has the older globes above the front doors as well. That was one of the best parts about working the Shuttle ramp a number of years ago - I always made a point to stroll the main lobby/atrium.

I think that's because of the unique look of Terminal 5. And since T5 is a designated landmark, it can't ever be torn down. T3 is viewed as just another old terminal that needs replacement, despite its colorful history.

Very true. But the Marine Air Terminal gives you a 1930s Pan Am feeling. Terminal 3 gives you a jetage Pan Am feeling.

sorry, no clue.
I want to know why they are not using their real early 744s at all- the ones with the real yucky seats and large but tight and really ancient biz seats-, one went to Boeing for LCF conversion, one is stored at TPE in all white paint(? also for LCF) and the last 2 can't be in service as their website says only 13 passenger 744s in service so it looks like the 4 new GE powered ones replaced the early 744s completely with no increase in the fleet.

Completely opposite for LAX haha. Deltas T5 is considered the better terminal for LAX.

Since China Airlines and China Southern Airlines have begun to cooperate on Frequent Flyer Program; China Airlines and China Eastern Airlines have code-shared on Taipei-Okinawa-Shanghai flights... then it is all right to see China Airlines and Air China share the same Terminal, I think.

I assume that the A340-300 no longer operates on the route. I remember stopping at JFK at around 9:00 P.M. when driving home from July 4th weekend in Long Island and standing right under an arriving China Airlines A340-300. One of the most beautiful sights I have seen at JFK, standing under an arriving A340-300 no more than 100 feet over my head with the beautiful New York sky line lit up with the beautiful colors from fire works. If I had had my camera it deffitenley would have been a kodak moment!

I was hoping that the route would be flown by the A340-300 this coming July so that I could possibly be able to catch this moment again in film to add to my wonderful memory!

That is correct. When so many of c's premium customers complained that they cannot buy business class seats because there are only 30 of them in CI's 343s, CI's top brass first changed every Wednesday's flight to the 744, then in December of 04, they switched back to 744s completely.

What I don't understand is 1. Why doesn't CI send their newest 744s to JFK? TPE-JFK is CI's longest route, you'd figure that they'd want to make sure these passengers can use the latest IFEs so make the flight seem shorter, and 2. Why doesn't CI upgrade the rest of their 744 fleet with the new seats and new IFEs? Most of their 744s are less than 10 years old...

I guess that's what happens when you have an incompetent government running China Airlines...

the govt doesn't run CI, just because a govt controlled foundation has a majority share of the ownership does not mean they have diddly squat to do with day to day management decisions like what plane goes where or with what IFE! it simply doesn't happen that way! If the ROC govt is incompetent (and their legislature certainly is infantile), then the ROC itself must be incredible to have an incompetent govt running a place considered in the top 10 most competitive economies many years running! If all other nations were just as incompetent!

if the problem was just the number of J seats, they can reconfigure the cabin, IIRC it was also a general " we don't like Airbus' " attitude by a vocal portion of the regular biz class passsengers also. Also since they found they couldn't do JFK-TPE direct anyway with the A343, going back to a 744 increases overall capacity substantially

The government doesn't run the direct operations of CI, however, they control who runs CI. So, instead of someone who has been with CI a reputable airliner for decades, they just appoint someone with good connections to run CI. Although I have to say the current president of CI is doing a pretty good job. (CI is now a major share holder of ROC's High-Speed rail because the government needs funds to rescue the project, without CI's approval...)

As for ROC's economy, it is very competitive due to the resiliency of ROC's citizens, not due to the goverment's economic policies... but that's another story and off topic... :-p

When CI used A343s on this route, they flew TPE-JFK non-stop due to the winds, I'm surprised the 744s can't do the same. A343 has a better range than 744? And when will CI do something about their long range solution? I'm shocked that CI has to make a stop in ANC on the LAX-TPE route with their new 744s... why is that??

Finally I was lucky to fly the A340 from JFK-TPE via ANC and nonstop returning in Dynasty class, I even flew Y class from JFK-TPE once and the IFE boxes get in way, I Think the seats are more cramped and I even prefer the non IFE 744 Y class seat better with the firm neck rests.

I enjoy CI's 744s as well, the seats are wider and softer. However, the new IFEs on the 343s makes the flight go by a lot faster, especially on the ANC-TPE leg in the winter.
