Qantas Adds Fifth Nonstop Brisbane-Los Angeles Flt.

Sat Oct 15, 2005 12:39 am

Qantas has announced it will add a fifth nonstop flight from Brisbane to Los Angeles starting Jan. 28.

Further changes to Qantas U.S. schedules include moving from eight flights a week on the airline's Melbourne/Los Angeles route to a double-daily service seven operating nonstop and seven via Auckland.

Qantas flights between Australia and the U.S. will increase to a record 39 per week from March 2006 when the airline commences new services to San Francisco.

Where does the deman for AUS-US traffic come from? I doubt it's tourism 'cause I've never met an Australian tourist here in the US and apart from the Olympics I don't know anyone here that has visited Australia. Then again, I live in Boston so we're quite removed from Australia. Is there that much business travel between Australia and the US?

Just because you're insular doesn't mean it doesn't exist. There is tourism and business traffic in both directions, and both categories are on the upswing.

Living in Los Angeles, I see Australian tourists and business people all the time. When I fly AA, there are usually Australians on board connecting to QF flights. And most of my friends have been to Australia at least once (including myself). If you haven't been there I highly recommend it.

It's just too bad the cost of a ticket is so high (I used miles on UA).

Exactly. I lived in LA for four years and there was tons of tourists there from AUS, and tons of my friends going to AUS. I am going in Feb. and CAN NOT WAIT!!! I also used UA miles, as the tickets are rather pricey. I wish AUS would let Singapore fly AUS-USA (sorry, I know I am going to get flamed, but I couldn't help myself).

So what does this mean for QF's BNE-AKL-LAX service? Will AKL be double daily to LAX or will BNE-AKL-LAX be replaced by MEL-AKL-LAX?

Since QF has a daily nonstop flight between BNE and LAX, I think they should shift the BNE-AKL-LAX flight to Adelaide, Cairns or Perth.

Has QF started selling the SFO-YVR tickets yet? Does QF really think that they will make any money on this route? Why couldn't they introduce a SYD-PPT-YVR routing?

I wish QF good luck on the SFO-SYD, SFO-YVR and SYD-YVR. That'll be awesome!

As an aussie living in the US, have to say there are a LOT of expats living, studying, working, or otherwise in the US (surprised to hear the other day over 20 graduate students alone here at UC Santa Cruz). For anyone who's been staying at a hotel or hostel anywhere in the US, they know that there are bound to be aussie tourists around (that goes for anywhere on earth too!). I have been on over 30 flights to and from the US to Aus and with the exception of one SYD/LAX ns with NZ in 2000, haven't seen any more than a few seats vacant. And in case you're wondering, BNE actually serves the market for the Sunshine and Gold Coasts, as well as Toowomba and the hinterland (catchment of ca. 1.2 million), not to mention feeder flights to the Great Barrier Reef - Cairns and the like - so it is no surprise their flights are popular!

7of9, you should come visit one day!

There NEEDS to be MORE competition on the US-Australia route. The prices are outrageous. I can fly from OKC-HKG for $800 bucks during parts of the year, but the prices to SYD are more around 2500 bucks consistently. The only other market that has direct service that is consistently high is USA-South Africa.

I have just been on the schedule search on qantas.co.nz and BNE-AKL-LAX will be replaced by MEL-AKL-LAX so still daily AKL-LAX by QF

Couldn't agree more. But every time in the past another airline has had service evidently it's not profitable (take NW, AA, CO). FJ sometimes have some cheap fares via NAN, although you'll be saving only $200 - 300. HA also have some decent fares ex-HNL which are worth looking into.

Travel during the holidays is particularly on the nose cost-wise; I just shelled out US$1800 rt LAX/BNE/LAX; normally it's around $1000. You could always try getting a ticked ex-LA and connecting flight with another airline into LAX - though I don't know if that is any cheaper!

Hope you get something good!

Maybe SYD-LAX could be on the agenda for Air New Zealand. In another thread I did hear that they are going to be launching some new long haul routes and their new CEO, Rob Fyfe has said that there will be no new 777 routes untill the end of next year. So, we might just see NZ 747's come back
to SYD again soon!

$2500 from OKC-SYD??? That is pretty outrageous. I was able to find a fare from ICT-SYD for about $1100, via AA's website. That's coach, of course.

There are lots of Aussie visitors in the US. I just had five in my house for two weeks, great fun, and next year I will be in their house. This was their third visit in a year, the teenagers were here last January for a student exchange program.

Anyone worried about NW miles, try to go down under on a partner, well worth it.

And for those on the west coast, I don't think the fares are that much worse than going to Europe. Plus, when you get there, they speak English, kind-of, are very friendly, and have soft toilet paper.

You think letting SQ on the route will result in consistantly lower prices? Dream on, dream on!

I wonder when QF would decided to start flying AKL-DFW....maybe it will be when/if they order some more planes, or when they get The WhaleJet and move some 747ER's to other routes..

You're right there. It will just be another airline bringing in the dollar bills.

They want to enter because of the excellent load factors and nice money making opportunities that are available.

I think Air NZ should fly be the airline allowed to fly the SYD-LAX over SQ, since QF flies the AKL-LAX route. It makes more sense to me, IMO.

Air NZ is allowed to - they just choose not to - they have flown SYD-LAX in the past and have full rights to start up again at any time they wish to

FYI Australia & New Zealand have a series of treaties collectively called "Closer Economic Relations" (CER). The effect of these treaties is create a "common market" between the two countries. There have been delays and up and downs in their implementation, but AFAIK they are now all in effect.

The result of these treaties is that any Oz company can operate in NZ as if it were a NZ company and vv for NZ companies in Oz. So all OZ airlines can operate within/to/from NZ/to/from anywhere and NZ airlines have the same rights from OZ. So not only do Air NZ have SYD-LAX rights they in fact have anywhere in Oz to anywhere rights.

And where would these come from exactly? More likely if ETOPS allows, it will be a 772ER route i'd say. UA should restart AKL-LAX at the same time.

Could this be a hint that SQ will be given the rights soon? With QF pushing for more states flights?

QF should show some adventure and try something like SYD-YVR-SEA-SYD with a 744ER instead of routing YVR via SFO.
