Cathay And Cockpit Visit?

Sat Oct 15, 2005 2:39 am

Folks I am to fly LAX-HKG on CP next week, and wonder about their Cockpit visit policy. Anybody knows what it is? Possible to witness a t/o or landing?... Whom to contact?...

Any information would be appreciated.

Cheers All

Because regulations introduced by the US, I reckon highly unlikely, even on Canadian CP, or Cathay CX.

Cathay Pacific was one of the airlines which offered cockpit visits most of the time. One one trip alone back in 2000 I not only spent hours in the cockpits of A330s, A340 and B744 but was also invited to remain on the jumseat for landing at HKG. Great crews on most flights...

Unfortunately these days are gone...but there's still Air France.  Wink

After 9/11, CX has changed the policy and will not allow pax to visit cockpit before take off, after landing, when park in the terminal. No more invitation. I have tried to ask them many times and they shouted "NO" in cantonese.

CX? Forget it! Damn fine airline, but not for cockpit visits and jumpseat flights.

I think after landing is possible. Inflight, not a chance in hell unless you're crew or family already in the jumpseat.

My CX cockpit vists in the past are something I will always remeber, the 742 back from Sapporro to Hong Kong was by far the best  Smile

As do several other airlines, which is a good thing.

When I flew CX SFO-HKG in September of 2004, I spoke with one of the pilots prior to boarding to request a cockpit visit. Unfortunately, he said that company policy prohibits cockpit visits, even while on the ground.

Yes! I have flown three times on the cockpit jumpseat on AF in the last two years.

Actually, this is incorrect. Visitors are not allowed in the cockpit in flight. There is no restriction on the ground although we are normally very busy during preflight preparation, and desperate to leave after a flight!

Yeah, probably depends on the pilots.. I was able to get into the cockpit before the flight and he told me to come back after the flight. If 9/11 didn't happen they would have allowed me to sit in the jumpseat for the landing but the new regulations gives them the power to shoot/kill anyone who trespasses in the cockpit (according to the 3rd officer). One great visit in the A340.. Such nice pilots.. I was probably there for 15 mins talking to them afterwards! I sat in the co-pilots seat (damn.. wish I had got the other side..) but that was great!
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

I will probably get flamed for this, being an aircraft lovers web site and all, but I would be rather nervous if, as a passenger, I knew that the pilot of my flight had let someone he just met onto the flight deck during flight. I wouldn't have a problem with someone the pilot knew being inside, but a stranger, no way. If I managed an airline I probably would have a long talk with a pilot that let a stranger on deck during flight.
