Consequences For KL If NW Where To Liquidate?

Mon Oct 17, 2005 12:07 am

I imagine some of you might find this an inappropriate question,NW being in
much trouble right now and KL doing really well.
And believe me, the thought of NW's liquidation makes me sick and I hope
it'll never happen, but being a KL employee I can't help but wonder what
such an event would mean to KLM and the huge co-op the two carriers have
between their respective hubs. Am I wrong that it would do a lot more harm
then good to KL???
Greetings.

From my humble opinion. The best thing for KLM would be the death of NWA. KLM, is day in and day out relying more and more on that of Air France. Air France, has made it well known that things are going to be changing more and more with their business model as the years go on.

A few things to look for if NWA ends service - Memphis, Minneapolis, Detroit, Seattle would loose service to Amsterdam. Boston would regain service ala KLM. Vancouver would see an increase in service at the expense of Seattle. Los Angeles would more than likely regain its summer seasonal second flight.

KLM, would reduce the number of connecting flights within Europe. KLM, would take over all Amsterdam-India flights now flown by NWA. There in most cases would be a stronger link made between KLM and DL/CO, at the expense of what was lost with NW. KLM, would more than likely increase aircraft size to EWR, ATL via the 772.

There is nothing lost with the end of NWA. Continental and Delta, could make up for NWA in a heartbeat.

Don't forget that costs/revenue is shared between AMS-DTW/MSP/SEA/MEM/BOM etc....... so that loss in revenue hits KLM as well....

Yeah, I agree, and with the Air France tie up KLM is not really in a bad position at all. Sometimes I even wonder if KLM has been helping NWA to limp along... anyone has any financial insights?

I don't think KLM will start a flight to BOS as they haven't flown to BOS in the years prior to the KL/NW link up. Detroit will probably remain in KLM's network and Seattle has a fair chance.

This would be impossible given the current aviation treaty between The Netherlands and India. KLM already uses all the frequencies for DEL and HYD.

Not correct. KLM will loose much as it doesn't have the level of intergration it currently has with NWA. Moreover it would start an application for anti-trust immunity as they (KLM) doesn't have this with CO and DL).
