Spotting Transcon Flights From Prescott, Arizona

Mon Oct 17, 2005 3:42 am

When I was a kid growing up in Prescott, Arizona with a deep interest commercial aviation, there wasn't much opportunity to watch planes. Throughout the years, Golden Pacific, Sunwest, Stateswest and Mesa all served PRC at various times.

For Christmas one year, I got a telescope (155X), which was intended to look at stars, however, I had a different use for it. It would set it up in my driveway and watch airplanes traversing the country mainly via Drake VOR. I would also see numerous planes in/out of Phoenix to LAS, SFO, SEA, etc.

Some interesting sightings in the late 80s:
Royal Jordanian L1011 (east to west)
Delta DC10 (east to west)
Cathay Pacific 747 (north to south)...still puzzles me to this day
USAir BAe-146 (NW to SE)
America West 747 (PHX to LAS)
TWA L1011 (LAS to PHX)
Alaska 727 (SE to NW)
Skywest Metroliner
Numerous AA, UA, DL, TW, WN, EA of all types as well as UPS 747s and Fedex DC10s.

Has anyone had any experiences with Prescott and the Drake VOR?

Wow, that's right, in places like that where the weather is always nice, you can easily see planes flying way overhead. I'll remember that!

The CX747 is indeed strange. Is it the cargo flight to ORD? I seem to remember they operate a cargo flight out to ORD.

It was flying north to south over PRC. Did they ever do a YVR-MEX route or something?

"I believe the only onward flight from YVR they ever did was JFK"

And SFO. But I don't recall them ever scheduling a passenger flight over Arizona.

This is kinda random, but (I grew up in Tucson, AZ) when I was a kid, I saw a Cathay Pacific 747 land at Tucson and taxi to one of the ramps....this could easily have been in the late 80s....don't know if that was a one time maintenance thing or there was a contract....but I remember distinctly the old green and white livery.....

Or, perhaps it was going to Pinal (Marana) for something maintenance related....
Roger that, turning to our "other" left

Wow...that is random! It was the old green and white too. It was either in 1988 or 1989. When it was flying over Prescott, it was still high enough that it formed a contrail.
