NZ-Unusual Breakfast Menu

Mon Oct 17, 2005 12:05 pm

I saw this in today's NZ Herald, it was sent into the "Side swipe" column by an NZ FA:

"I am a long-haul FA for Air NZ. I recently worked a flight from LAX to AKL. Three hours out of AKL, like clockwork, out go the breakfast carts.

Stopping at the row to be served, I turn to be greeted by a smiling American couple, "Good morning folks" I say, "Would you care for the continental breakfast or the mixed grill?"

To which the lady replies, "Oh, you serve Squirrel?"

"Pardon?" I respond, "Squirrel?"

The lady turns to her husband, wearing an "I love California T-shirt" and says, "Did you hear that honey, they serve minced Squirrel!"

Turning back to me she says, "Go ahead and give Tom the continental, I'll take the Squirrel."

I just smile, hand the meals over and think to myself, "you gotta love that accent barrier, welcome to NZ honey and enjoy your stay!"

Once again, truth is stranger than fiction......

I often special-order the squirrel meal (SQML.)
On MAS and SIA it comes as a satay.

Hee hee hee! That's too funny. I've gotta admit I had to ask about a few things I heard when we went to Australia. The unfamiliar accent and unfamiliar terminology combined to give some interesting concepts!
But that was when I ruled the world

That said, NZ does have the rather unappetising warm mashed banana filo pastry on some morning trans-Tasman routes...

Jafa39,

That was me and my wife on that flight that you spoke to. I'm pretty sure you said squirrel, and that's exactly what you ended up serving us.

I fail to see where te issue is, especially since your "mixed grill" actually does have squirrel in it.

Great service though. My wife and I thank you for the relaxing flight.

The most unusual meat I have seen in terms of airline food is Duck.

If that's the Duck that lays the square eggs Qantas put in their breakfast croissants it is a very rare beast indeed!!

It's possum actually.......I didn't serve anyone, I am just the messenger, I think I am a bit old and large to be an FA but I'd probably look ravishing in the new uniform!!  Smile

Here's an interesting menu from SK Business Class:

Reindeer noisettes with thyme potatoes, glazed onions,
green beans and mushroom sauce

I had duck once flying Bangkok to Koh Samui with Bangkok Airways - absolutely delicious. Great airline too - we flew from Louang Prabang (Laos) to Bangkok with them a couple of weeks back and for the price they are excellent.

Actually, last time I flew Air New Zealand, I thought the food was pretty good. Flying MEL-AKL we had a really nice cold-smoked salmon salad which wouldn't have been out of place in a restaurant.

must have been a while back - since they changed their short haul to express flights the food Transtasman has gone way downhill - but hey , the prices are one helluva lot cheaper than they used to be and no silly Saturday night minimum stays anymore so it all balances out  Smile

I once flew NZ AKL-SYD and was served scrambled tofu fro breakfast.Talk about unusual breakfast, it was disgusting, even the cabin crew looked in horror as they served it.

At least noone from NZ has replied to my letter, nor the next flights comments about the fish sauce in the noddle salad. Mind you thoses comments were made to the Purser, then internet and the telephone. What was I expecting. Someone to take ownership of the problem?

I flew domestic SGN-HAN a year or two ago on Vietnam Airlines and was surprised to have a choice of four (!) entrees on that 90 min flight but it sounded like one of the choices was horse but not sure....I don't think they would have huge abundance of horses in Vietnam to be able to serve as airline food but I could be wrong. I opted for something else and it was a really good meal on a really nice flight.

It was funny (in retrospect) that I was a Vegetarian meal leaving Sydney, that got more and more vegan on the return.

But the fish sauce. No excuse. After been told by a total queen in the SYD office that the only special meal was vegetarian, and then to be given fish sauce. He should have saved the self importance and used it to talk to the customer that was contributing to his salary.

I know that is a cliche, but as someone that ends up paying K/Y fares, I do expect a little more.

Still waiting for some acknowledgement from NZ.

I got given beef tongue on Olympic (OA) once when I was young. It was delicious until I found out what it was (typical kid!)!
