Airbus Will Build Parts For The 787

Wed Oct 19, 2005 2:54 am

I don`t know if this was posted before:

I found it only in German online news.
http://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/0,1518,380427,00.html
http://www.netzeitung.de/wirtschaft/unternehmen/363449.html

Quote:
EADS, parent company of the European airplane manufacturer airbus, helps the competitor Boeing for its new model 787 "Dreamliner" with parts, so that the machine can get as light and thus economical as planned. As the "Financial Times Germany" reported, the Augsburger EADS plant will supply a large trunk construction unit from composite material for the new Boeing long-distance aircraft. "We have a preliminary agreement, but still no series contract", a speaker of the enterprise said to the news paper. The rear cover of the airplane cab, the pressure bulkhead, from Augsburg would be the first part, which Boeing will receive from EADS from Germany.

Well Spirit Aerostructures which was spun off from Boeing (formerly Boeing Wichita) maybe contracted out to build parts for Airbus aircraft. It's so funny how the world turns in teh aircraft manufacturing business.

Me??? A Boeing partisan? I think you have me confused with someone else. If I have any bias between Airbus and Boeing it would be in favor of Airbus as the only airliner I've ever flown was an A319 (not in commercial service at the time). However, I make every effort to set aside prejudices and stay as objective as I can.

Globalization....
Its only a matter of time before the two companies, shy of merging, collaborate on an all new aircraft design, then share assembly duties. The engine manufacturers are at it already: CFM, IAE, Engine Alliance; and there is rampant collaboration in the defense industry as well... Why not the aircraft themselves? A and B each have some strong suits and expertise where they can help each other out, making an overall better product for their customers.

On numerous threads, I've been very pessimistic about seeing a new SST for perhaps 20 years, if ever.
Were it to happen though, in the foreseeable future, this would be the point where you saw extensive, in-depth, acting as partners cooperation between Boeing and Airbus, with major Japanese elements too, (which is why that rather large, impressively launched 1/10 model was launched in Oz the other day).

I flew to HAM on a scheduled flight. Airbus sent a driver to pick me up (who spoke even less English than I speak German, which made conversation very difficult). Yes, by flying I meant that I took the controls (only on the delivery flight, not during the test flights). Though I was in the cockpit for most of the test flights and did help figure out some of the problems the aircraft was having, I don't think I would have taken the controls even if offered. At some points there were 7 of us in the cockpit.  crowded  It was one of the most memorable five day periods of my life. And Airbus was very, very good to me during the whole affair. I was very positively impressed.

The German text says that it is only the real pressure bulkhead.

The present agreement only covers a few "pre-production" examples. It is not subcontracted from Boeing, but from Vought in Dallas, TX to whom Boeing has subcontracted greater parts of the fuselage.

It seems impractical to transport such large composite structures half way around the globe, so it is probably not intended to have EADS make mass production.

It is likely to be a stop gap procedure lasting only until Vought in Dallas has got their large scale carbon fibre composites production facilities built up and in full swing.

The EADS facility in Augsburg, Germany has a couple of decades of experience with large carbon fibre structures, partly gained at times when other manufacturers were talking about "Airbus plastic planes". That comes in handy now.

A pretty soon scenario:

Airbus to Boeing call: "-Hello Airbii here, could you send us your best test pilot, we have a scam with a prototype"
Boeing to Airbus: "-Oh wait a little [music - music - music] allo Airbii, it's okay, he'll be there tomorrow ; but please don't use him too long, we're in the middle of some difficult stuff certification, ok ?"
Airbus to Boeing: "Thanx pal, we'll take care of him ; à propos, do you still need our two Belugas, cause our third bird will have to pass a check ?"
Boeing to Airbus: "No, that's okay, we'll keep one and send back to you the other, anyway that's a great plane, our CEO just carried his yacht in Florida with it; no, no, not even a scratch, you know how we're cautious here"
Airbus to Boeing: 'Ok pal, gotta go, there is a government representative on hold, talking on subsidies, ya know"
Boeing to Airbus: "Yeah I know, this is always a complicated thing, we should talk one day about pressing those politicians to be more practical ; take care, ciao!"

This is quite ironic. Boeing speaks so negatively about the A380 and against Airbus and yet they also supply the company with the parts necessary to build it, and Airbus does the same back for Boeing's planes while competing heavily against them. If these two companies were to merge, it'd be the happiest day of my life because it would kill all the bickering going on in this forum.

If airplanes don't get any better and more economy, manufacters aren't buying new planes. And then your market will drop down.

So if you want to keep work, you have to help eachother to let the market open and going.

Those manufacters are even more friendly to eachother then some fans here on a.net  Wink
Let is be a example for some people out here :P
