United Applies For Multiple US-Mexico Routes

Wed Oct 19, 2005 3:05 am

As they stated in their letter of intention several days ago, United applied for the following routes:

Chicago, IL - Cancun, Mexico
Los Angeles, CA - San Jose del Cabo, Mexico
Los Angeles, CA - Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Chicago, IL - Puerto, Vallarta, Mexico

ExpressJet (Continental Express) applied for the same route:

Hmm

I have two observations to make about this

1 - interesting to see two Star partners bidding against each other for the
same route (LAX-SJD) from a point which isn't even a hub for either of
them
US Airways/America West Apply For LAX-SJD (by NKMCO Oct 18 2005 in Civil Aviation)

2 - I wonder if UA had shown more interest in Mexico a few years ago then
maybe MX would still be in Star Alliance

OT - I seem to remember reading at the time that MX pulled out / arranged to get themselves kicked out of Star ( depending on whose posts you read ) that there was a 2 year "stand down" period during which they were not permitted to join another alliance - should be up 01 April next year - will anybody be particularly surprised if OW have an announcement to make on that date ?

United has a hub at LAX- US/HP do not.

United operates a hub at LAX and is the airport's largest carrier. LAX-SJD is a high yield tourist destination that AS and AA do quite well on

I'm not sure if Express Jet is going to get it, unless they propose several frequencies with the ERJ.

Interesting thought. It may have been the case.

would you still call LAX a UA hub ? I know it was years ago - I was under the impression that they had swung a bloody big axe at it and they now only had IAD ORD DEN SFO and NRT as hubs

Maybe, but now they have to do the job.

I think CO is oneworld and UA star, maybe that´s why both carriers are on the same route.

sorry , N405MX my original post might not have been very clear - I meant that both UA and US are bidding for LAX-SJD against each other

UA indeed did swing the axe and cut many mainline routes (a lot of United Shuttle) and international routes. But it's most current press releases lists Los Angeles as a hub and it has added more UA express and international service. Seasonal second daily to Sydney, second daily to MEX and 2x to Narita this past summer. LAX will never rival SFO in terms of long haul international routes for UA, but I think they could carve a niche in Mexico and other Latin American routes IMO.
