Iraqi To Resume Service To Beirut

Sat Oct 22, 2005 3:17 am

Just came across this very brief article saying that Iraqi Airways will resume flights to Beirut after a 24 year absence. This is good news for both countries.

http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/view.php?StoryID=20051021-092700-2647r

Does anyone know how the airline is currently doing and what their schedule is like?

Cheers,

What I know is that they are flying to Amman and domestically to Basra.

Thanks

Thanks for the update TLIMA.

They resumed flights to Cairo yesterday on Thursday as well. They're operating to Cairo on a twice weekly basis.

http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/view.php?StoryID=20051019-100625-3428r

I have no idea about the Beirut schedule, but I expect maybe twice weekly.

As for their other destinations, they fly to Basra, Arbil, Suleimaniyeh in Iraq and outside they fly to Amman, Damascus, Istanbul, and Dubai.

It looks like more and more Airlines are using Baghdad Airport..
Syrianair resumed service from Damascus to Baghdad after a 25 year interruption. The airline stopped operating this route in 1980 when the countries broke off diplomatic ties. A Boeing 727-200 was used for the inaugural flight and Syrianair will operate 3 flights a week.

This is good news! Did the safety situation at the airport improve?

Well, let me add. They also have at least 2 B707 and 2 B727. Till the moment they are not operational and grounded in Amman's Queen Alia Int'l Airport in Jordan since the War on Iraq in 1991. I heard that Iraqis will try to rehabilitate them to be in service. Moreover, Iraq flew most of its fleet out of Iraq during that war not to be shelled be the counterparts. I know that they have their aircrafts in Jordan, Iran, and Algeria.

Addition: There are 2 weekly flights to Baghdad and 2 weekly flights to Basrah from DXB (Chartered flights not on Iraqi Airways)
Thanks.

Saw them last week. There's at least three 727s and the 707s are covered in sand. I suspect the chances of getting them going again are next to zero.

Thanks for responses and insight. I knew that they were flying to Amman but I wasn't sure about other destinations.

I unfortunately think that the 707s and 727s will never see the skies again as well. I cannot imagine that after all these years, it would be possible to make them functional again.

Anyways best of luck to the airline, the country and its people...

So, to recap, can someone now please outline Iraqi Airways' schedule with destinations served, their frequency, and aircraft? Thanks in advance.

Yes, if anyone can also confirm the plans for the 767 that'd be much appreciated!

Yeah, where's the 767 and when is it going to fly in commercial service? On a sadder note, the seven-ohs have been left to die. They will not fly again.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

So far they only use the B767 for official trips by the government officials .

I just read this article on Iraqi Airways' return to Beirut
http://www.lorientlejour.com/page.aspx?page=article&id=297402
They will start with 2 flights a week (as expected by BA) using the Boeing 737-200.
While it is true that IA hasn't flown to BEY for a long time (flights were stopped in 1981), the airline maintained some presence in Lebanon throughout the eighties, as their flights out of Larnaca provided interesting connections to the Gulf and the Far East and were used by many Lebanese during the war. I remember adds for IA in the press (including a lavish section of several pages in the "Revue du Liban", dating to 87 or 88) and even sponsorship of TV programs on the LBC TV channel.

Welcome back IA...

Cheers,

Wassim.

Currently this route is operated twice weekly by the Lebanese carrier Flying Carpet which operates a single Fairchild Metro.
The Iraqi service will be a more serious operation without undermining the Lebanese company's work.

I have heard a rumour about the 767 starting ops to Europe. London has been mentioned but looking at the level of their current operation and the political situation i think this won't happen for a while.

I hope they come to MUC. With DI they can feed pax from all over Germany into their flights, independent from LH. This is not possible at FRA.
Exceptions confirm the rule.

I read a very interesting article by Robert Fisk in which he flew on that flight.  Smile

I heard it is pretty popular. It's a scheduled charter flight and it mainly caters to the Lebanese who go to Iraq and work on various projects (and risk their lives in getting kidnapped).

Here is a shot of the first flight just after arriving in Beirut:

The Iraqi Transport Minister is on the left walking with the Lebanese Transport Minister on the right.

The flight also carried an official delegation and 50 journalists.

Flights will initially operate 2x weekly on Tuesdays and Sundays. In two months, the service will be upgraded to daily.
http://www.aaco.org/pubnews.asp?id=883&lang=1

Flights will operate on 737-200s.

Here's the aircraft that operated the first flight, it's leased from Dolphin Air which is why it is in a hybrid scheme:

It's good to have Iraqi Airways back!

On a sidenote, Royal Air Maroc begins 2x weekly 73G/738 non-stop service from Casablanca this Sunday (October 30) and Jazeera Airways begins daily A320 non-stop service from Kuwait this Monday (October 31).
