The Offical WilmaFlorida Cancellation Thread

Sun Oct 23, 2005 6:43 am

Thats right...this time its Wilma.I do not know the status of EYW but i do know the airlines status!

And it looks like except 1 EGF all flights were cancaled...do you all think that was a little too early to close down today? Resedents have to get out, too!

looks like MIA and FLL are currrently operating well...post ANY Florida Cancellations in this thread!

Also, please note that CUN and Cozumel are obviously closed. My thoughts are with the people living and visiting the area. It's scary, but that spring break capitol was basically wiped off the face of the earth last night...should be interesting to see if the airlines pull a MSY on these cities.

My friend was supposed to fly home to MIAA from ORD tonight on AA 538, due into MIA at 11:23p tonight. Just got the call that they've cancelled it. He's rebooked on AA 1940 due in at 9:54pm. Fingers crossed that they don't have to cancel that one as well.

As of 12:30PM edt, MLB is still up and running. As of now,
no cancellations. DL has a few flights that RON so I'm guessing
they will be cancelled as we're in the northern part of the track.

MLB will be operating at full schedule. Only stations effected for DL flights will be SRQ, PBI, FLL, MIA, RSW as of now.

DeltaMIA. Thanks for the update. I hope it stays that way. We've
had our fill of storms up here. I haven't got all of Jeanne's damage
repaired yet, and that was last year. NO MORE!

Thanks for any insight.

If all AA MIA operations are cancelled, that basically shuts down their entire Carribbean network then, as the ATR's could never reach another AA hub in their wildest dreams.

DL 5779 from IAD have been cancelled. I guess that
means MLB will be closed until this effing hurricane
leaves the state.

Quick question: What're the chances of airline ops in MIA and MCO being relatively back to normal on Wednesday afternoon? I have a friend flying out of MCO on Wednesday and connecting in MIA.

Assuming the terminals/nav infrastructure aren't damaged, which I would say is a pretty good chance as this isn't the strongest of hurricanes, it's not taking a direct hit on either of those terminals, and all... I'd think there's probably a pretty good chance of your friend getting out of there by Wednesday afternoon. This hurricane will be blowing through fast and hard.

According to WFOR-TV here in Miami, all FLL departures after 8pm cancelled, as well arrivals after 9pm.

As of right now, there's no arriving traffic into PBI, FLL and only 4 flights enroute to MIA:

2 US flights (PHL and CLT)
An AA A306 from JFK
China Airlines (presumably 744) from ANC

I know this isn't in Florida, but I heard on the Weather Channel that the fuel supply in Cancun got contaminated, so when they reopen Cancun's airport, the airlines are going to have to tanker fuel into Cancun for the return leg. As such, expect a lot of inbound tech-stops and weight-restrictions, although I can't imagine that there are that many people that will be going to Cancun over the next couple of days to vacation.

95% of MIA departures are cancelled through tommorow morning.. I just check the departures board at MIA.

AA has their deep South American Important Routes leaving just before midnight to Rio, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Santiago de Chile.

All arrivals are cancelled for tommorow, as for tonight US has a flight coming in from Charlotte and AA has one flight coming in from ORD according to MIA board.

There has been extensive roof damage at MIA. The airport will not re-open until tomorrow, possibly mid-afternoon. MIA is structurally sound, but they need to survey the damage and have some roofs to patch up. Airlines might be tight for gate space for the next 3-4 days.

Not just AA, but all flights are canceled for tomorrow at MIA. The damage at MIA is not major, but they need to put back up the perimeter fence, which has been knocked down in dozens of sections, and there is some terminal flooding due to roof leaks.

So what is up with FLL, extensive damage?? What do you think it is.

As for CUN, we hope it will be back up by Spring Break, it looked pretty bad and it doesn't look just like a regular one where everyone comes out and cleans, everyone was saying this one was different.

No. Planes can still take off/land, but the terminals are closed. Besides, I doubt jetBlue was stupid enough to leave planes in FLL. Even AA evacuated almost their entire MIA-based fleet out of Miami. Only two AA planes were parked at MIA during the storm...both of them made it through with no damage, BTW.

From WPLG-TV, Channel 10, Miami:

Miami International Cleared For Takeoff

POSTED: 1:19 pm EDT October 25, 2005

MIAMI -- Miami International Airport reopened Tuesday at noon, just one day after Hurricane Wilma struck South Florida.

The airport suspended all incoming and outgoing flights Monday while Wilma left its mark throughout the state.

The first flight out of Miami will depart at 5 p.m., and operations are expected to return to normal thereafter.

Miami International Airport is the busiest U.S. hub for Latin American travel and the busiest state hub for foreign travel.

At least 2,000 flights, affecting hundreds of thousands of fliers, have been canceled into and out of South Florida's four major airports.

The airport is the first to reopen following Wilma's wrath. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, Key West International and Palm Beach International airports are still closed.
