Palestinian Airlines Ready To Invest In Alitalia?

Wed Oct 26, 2005 2:36 am

I found that article on a South Tyrolean website:

http://www.dolomiten.it/nachrichten/artikel.asp?KatID=c&ArtID=68938

Translation of some passages:

Up to 30 percent of struggling Alitalia's capital could go into foreign hands. Gaza-based Palestinian Airlines is said to be ready to participate in the planned capital increase, reports business paper 'Milano e Finanza'.

The Palestinian airline wants to acquire up to 10 percent of the capital increase's total volume of EUR 1.2 billion, resulting in an investment of EUR 120 million.

Saudi Arabian Airlines is also interested to acquire a share (up to 10 percent), as well as a Romanian airline.

The capital increase is planned to be finished by year-end. Ten banks are said to be involved, e.g. Deutsche Bank and Intesa.

JM

It is really surprising!  eyepopping  After all, Palestinian Airlines still doesn't fly and thus makes no profit at all. If we add very bad state of economy of the Palestinian territories, this information is even more confusing. Even if Palestinian Airlines had those 120 million dollars, would they invest them in buying some new planes. As far as I know, they only have some Dash 8s and old 727-200.

Well, that sound more logical to me than Palestinian Airlines.

The Palestinians HAVE been involved in strategic overseas investments. In fact, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) at its peak in the 80s was involved in agriculture, trade and other sectors in Africa and other parts of the world.

However, given the mostly inactive status of Palestinian Airlines, and the Palestinian National Authority's poor finances, it is highly unlikely PF would ever fund 10% of the Alitalia capital base increase (120m Euros).
If there is a will, there is a way

I don't understand what Palestinian has to gain. I understand they might be waving goodbye to 120m euros.

...and I want to buy half of British Airways...

Sometimes lack of oxygen in the mountains plays really bad jokes

Thanks Dolomiten (What the hell is this??), Alitalia doesn't need this kind of information right now

It seems you didn't read carefully...it's not the website which first published that piece of information.

Nobody talks about buying the entire airline.

Hello to all

Today, in Milano Finanza (the same source quoted by www.dolomiten.it) there is an article in which Alitalia claiming itself not to have elements neither confirming this kind of partecipation from Saudi Arabia and Romania carriers nor elements that could let indicate this (hoping my translation could be as precise as possible).

Just a reminder in discussing this: The social/political situation in the region is not a topic for civil aviation. Please keep posts not directly related to aviation in the non-aviation forum.

That is true, so a foreign investment for Palestinians is no surprise.

Yes, but I think that the future is not clear for Palestinian Airlines to buy airplanes and get them to Gaza to be bombed.

All in all, for me as a Palestinian living in Palestine, I do not really think the Palestinian would make such a move. They better concentrate on other things to do.

Can you tell me more about the current fleet status of Palestinian Airlines? Where are their planes now?
Also, I'm interested to know more about Gaza airport. I've heard that the airport was heavily damaged. Is some kind of re-construction going on?

Thank you Aleksander for your interest.

As of the Airport, the runway of it is damaged it was ripped off by bulldozers. The buildings are slightly damaged. The airport was very convenient for Palestinians to travel from but not any more.

The fleet is about 2 (Not sure) Canadian Dash Havilland 8 (Has never been used), and one B727 donated by a Saudi Billionaire, 2 Fokker 50. Palestinian used to fly to Doha, Amman, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Cairo. The Airplanes are grounded in Arish Egypt and Amman Marka Airport. Nowadays, They are flying between Arish and Amman only.

No construction is going on in the Airport.

Sorry to contradict you, Jetmaster: It took five minutes of my time to read that article, and seriously, it seems to me they're being short of news if they write something like this, AT LEAST.
Alitalia, even being in a difficult condition since some years, it's a pretty big and respectable company, and in no need to be bought by non-operating carrier, as this confirms:
