Airline Employees Smoking At Counter...

Wed Oct 26, 2005 8:12 pm

I was working our 7PM flight at gate A8 at Barajas Monday evening and was shocked to see the 2 IB employees at the adjacent gate (7.40PM flight to ZRH) both smoking while attending passengers. The comments I overheard (in Swiss-German and French) from their pax were not especially nice in this regard...

I have also noticed a few days ago 3 IB ticket counter staff smoking at their desk while serving pax...

I'm quite new to Spain (have been here since February), but nowhere else in the world have I seen Airline staff, in uniform and on duty, smoking in full view of their customers......

Even though I work at MAD, with Spanish colleagues, no-one at my airline would even dare lighting up a cigarette in our offices at our desks..... So, is that permitted with Iberia only?

Really I thought it was odd to say the least....

They certainly did not expect an airline employee in MAD to be able to understand them. Sometimes an "obscure" language spoken only by a few has its advantages. So I better be careful the next time I pass through MAD.  Wink

While I am not a militant non-smoker I would nevertheless regard such an action as rather impolite and interpret it as a lack of respect for the customer.

I don't want to turn this into an IB-trashing thread by any means, but based on my last flights with them (both ZRH-MAD-MIA) I am not really surprised as their service was by far the worst that I have experienced in quite some time and that includes flights on so called third world carriers.

I saw it in Turkey (IST), albeit visa staff rather than airline staff. They were also far more interested in talking to each other than serving me.

I have an indelible memory of three American Airlines flight attendants smoking at the aircraft gate in Auckland, New Zealand. (At one point, American flew DC-10's from Honolulu to Auckland and Sydney.)

It looked horrible. They were talking loudly about smoking, joking, and calling attention to themselves.

I'm sure that the rules forbade them from smoking in the terminal, but they figured that nobody would catch them at such a distant port-of-call.

You can if you want to. I recently flew SVQ MAD ALC MAD SVQ and IB were absolutely nothing special, and only on 1 out of 4 flights did anyone show up to offer us drinks (to buy), although we did get offered a Spanish newspaper. A 2 hr delay on the way back from ALC didn't help either, which lost my connex to SVQ, so in total I spent about 7 hours in MAD in 2 days. I found MAD to be a dingey poorly lit smokey airport, with plently of people smoking away from the designated areas, including staff at the counters. I really got the feeling that in general IB staff were not very interested in their pax. Contrast that with the brilliant (full) service I got on Air Nostrom MAD BOD MAD ... although these 2 flights cost me 2x as much as my 4 on IB ... so maybe you get what you pay for. IB has a lot of competition domestically now - Air Europa, Spanair, Veulling and some of the fares are crazy low.

I've seen that happen in Portugal two years ago they were smoking too at the counter when there is no flight for departure or arrival yet. I guess they are allowed to do it unless they imposed smoking inside the departure lounge.
