Malaysia Airlines Font Question

Thu Oct 27, 2005 8:17 am

My question to anyone who may know: On the Malaysia Airlines aircraft, there are 3 letters with a little corner shaded in a red triangle (MAS). Does anyone know the significance of that? Does it mean anything special? Malaysian Air System? Could that be it?

Good observation ... not sure! But your suggestion sounds totally plausible. (I guess I failed my internet IQ test? LOL)

If so, the next three questions you need to answer are:

1) Why red?
2) Why a triangle?
3) Why bottom right?

The MAS in the red triangle fully stands for Malaysia Airline System, the red triangles are simply to show the letters more clearly than it would be shown with the blue paint. Malaysia Airlines full name (no one uses it though) is Malaysia Airline System-Berhad, Inc.

MAS, comes from their official company name, and it used to be in their old livery such as this. You will still see people refering to the airline as MAS as well as the usual MH and now incorrect "Malaysian"

Malaysians worldwide still call Malaysia Airlines, 'MAS'.

Locally in Malaysia - 'MAS' was chosen as a colloquiol acronym (which cunningly was also short for 'Malaysian Airline System') as it emulated the word 'Emas' (pronounced - 'er-mas') which in Malay means 'Gold'. Hence MAS' previous and current service models were (and some still are) based around the word 'gold' - eg. Golden Club Class, Golden Lounge, Golden Boutique and its old inflight magazine was called 'Wings of Gold'. Its former slogan was 'Fly the Golden world of MAS' throughout much of the 70s and 80s.

Sceptics have also found other uses for the acronym however as MAS and SIA split into its current existing entities...
'MAS' - 'Mana Ada Sistem' (translates into 'Where is the System') whilst 'SIA' equally was read as 'Sistem Ini Ada' (translating into 'Here is the System').

MAS has however come a long way since the 70s and as a result Malaysians still fondly call it 'MAS'.
