Can I Take A Shaving Razor On Board?

Thu Oct 27, 2005 12:09 pm

Tomorrow i'm going for a one nighter for work and i've never not checked luggage before. I'm only taking one bag, and, I was wondering if you can take a shaving razor as carry-on with WestJet. I can find lots of information about a straight razor (obviously not allowed) but, nothing about a typical Mach 3  Smile This flight is within Canada.

Thanks!

You could always contact Westjet reservations and ask.

I believe you can, but you can also usually get one for free from the hotel you are staying at (bic type disposable, of course).

I haven't flown within Canada in many years, but never had a problem in the U.S. I would think all those business travelers who go carry-on would have had problems long ago if it were an issue.

I bet it won't be a problem. In the U.S. the law says that safety razors, or blades otherwise contained in a cartridge, are ok as carryons. I don't see why canadian regs should be much different. I flew home from Japan not long ago and they were fine with the razor in my carryon too. If you would rather not lose your mach 3 in the event of it being disallowed, only bring the handle and the cartridge you are using right now, then surrender the cartridge. Like Ikramerica says your hotel should be happy to provide you a disposable.
Ala the commercials, I am no expert on canadian laws but I am staying in a holiday inn right now.... and they offer free razors!

This definitely will not be a problem. I travel several times a week, within US, between US-Canada, and to / from Europe / Asia and it's not an issue anywhere.

Nothing to do with the airline by the way, unless they have their own security checkpoints.

Have a good trip!

Yes you can, the Airport security will allow it, andthe airlines would not know what in your bags anyways, so go a head and have a good flight.

Yes razors are allowed.. but you, then again, it probably all just depends on the subjective opinions of the TSA security personnel you might encounter.  Wink

Not a problem at all, don't forget that most airlines actually include a shaving razor in their first/business class amenity kits.

The TSA couldn't find candy in a candy store. Take your razor. If they find it, whether or not they'll confiscate it has little to do with the rules. They confiscate what they feel like confiscating and let through what they feel like letting through. I'm sure most of them have never read their own rules, though many of them probably could read if they wanted to. They are above the rules.

I've never had a problem with razors, and as others have mentioned you tend to get them onboard too!

Even if the TSA/security folk take it away it's what $15? Buy another when you get to the other end!

I have traveled with my mach3 and other shaving razors ... never had any problems.

On long haul flights, airlines even provide razors on board (in business / first of course) so you should be just fine.

I would just bring with you 'throwaway' razors, and if have it taken, you can always get some at the hotel or a store along the way. As far as I know, 'safety' razors are allowed, but keep them with the shave cream. Maybe you could bring an electric/battery razor?

As many others already wrote, traveling with a razor in your hand luggage is no problem. The TSA checked my carry-on trolley twice at the gate before boarding at JFK's Terminal 1, they always saw my razor but never said anything.

But apparently they have problems when it comes to contact lenses cleaning liquid, one time they asked me if it contains "dangerous chemical ingredients", I then asked if they would clean their contact lenses with a dangerous chemical liquid.  Yeah sure Some of these guys are so stupid that it is not fun anymore.

I buy a package of a disposable razor with 8 units inside similar to the Mach 3 for $10 a pack...about $1.25 a razor...

I have never had a problem.

As to what harm they can do? Well, like an idiot, I once decided to shave on my non stop LAX-SIN 18 hour marathon flight. Big mistake. Blood everywhere. There must be something about altitude cabin pressure and the amount a face can bleed. My kids offered to have me packed in the Singapore Airline A345 onboard morgue.

I had a TSA screener at SFO tell me that the X-ray machines are absolutely safe (for film) continuing "We put each other through all the time. It's fun and nothing bad has ever happened."

Does any ever read the posts! The original poster posted about a flight within Canada. The TSA has nothing to do with a flight within Canada. No problems with safety razors such as the MACH3.

What about Safety razors? The older type that use standard double edged razor blades? TSA website says safety razors, but I don't know if they meant that kind..

Up until now, I just bring disposibles when I travel, but use a "true" safety razor at home.
