MD-88 And MD-90 Operators

Fri Oct 28, 2005 6:12 am

I've been trying to do some research to find out who are the other major worldwide MD-88 and MD-90 operators besides Delta and SAS. Anyone know of anyone else? Thanks!

I don't think Alitalia has -88s or -90s. Iberia has some -88s from Aviaco, right?

JL has 16 MD90s.
DL is the only airline that operates both.
There's some more MD-88s produced for leasing firms; perhaps some are in Latin or South America. There are none in Asia though.

SV has 29 MD90-30s . They're pretty unique, as SV was the only carrier to opt for the glass cockpit and uprated engines. Which will make them pretty tough to sell, once they need to replace them.

The Saudi MD90's are pretty new & should be in the fleet for quite some time.

When I worked for Boeing Long Beach I had the opportunity to work on the SV MD-90 program. Very nice aircraft but I have a feeling that once SV is done with them that will be the end of the road for the Saudi MD-90.

JK have on this Internet address (http://www.airfleets.net/flottecie/Spanair-fleet.htm) 37 MD80's (81,82,83,87)

...but You can't be sure with Spanair. On their homepage it says 31 MD80´s and a fleet with 54 aircrafts. In their latest newsletter they say a 65 aircraft fleet.
Love flying...

You missed American Airlines, they are the world's largest operator of the MD-80 series. "(American now operates a fleet of 260 MD-80s)" quoted from Airliners.net. If you are ever at DFW, that's pretty much all you will see.

The problem is, the title says quite clearly: MD-88 and MD-90 operators. AA does not operate 260 of those.

I thought all MD-88s and MD-90s had the same glass cockpit (EFIS) ? To my knowledge, all MD-88s and MD-90s had a new cockpit which was different from the one on the other MD-80s.

And SV wants to repalce them, there is still a chance that a single carrier could take them all. Their fuel burn is still quite low, it has quiet engines and very good performance.
Exceptions confirm the rule.

The MD88 and MD90 cockpits are similar, but, there are subtle differences between the two.

The Saudi MD90's, the MD90EFD is an all glass cockpit and is closer to the 717 cockpit....

Did the three ex-Air Aruba/Pro Air MD90s that were stored still in existance? I heard that they were being scrapped?

As far as the one that was W/O, what incident was that? Or is this the prototype MD-90 that was scrapped not too long ago?

Besides thae fact that AA does not operate the aircraft that are the subject of this thread, A.net's data sheets are wrong again. AA operates nearly 100 more than that.

Aren't AA's MD80s actually MD-83s, not MD-88s ?

(and what's the difference between those, anyway?)
