Will Qatar Airways Ever Overtake Emirates?

Fri Oct 28, 2005 5:56 pm

The two rivals love playing the "tit-for-tat" games, copy each other in many respects, have a similar route network and fleet, though Qatar enjoys the 5-star rating along with SQ, CX and MH.

Emirates has far more experience, is much larger and appears for now much better organized, even though it appears to be ploughed by internal employee problems.

EK is already among the top 15 airlines in the world, Qatar is badly lagging behind, so I ask you; are tables ever likely to turn in Qatar's favour or will EK continue to dominate the skies from that part of the world?

Hi Joker

according to a number of my ex-colleagues in the travel industry there is a feeling that EK has "dropped the ball" in terms of customer service - certainly the feedback from customers has not been as good and there have been increasing levels of complaints . The good news is that EK seems to be starting to take this seriously so hopefully they will be back on track soon .

EK has just had their 20th birthday - I am not sure how old QR is - but it only seems to be the last few years that they are coming to everyones attention - if they manage to continue their spectacular growth without hitting the same problems EK have had with their growth outstripping their service levels then they will be a force to be reckoned with .

I have only flown EK , an experience which I found better than most airlines , but not as good as previous flights on MH or SQ - former colleagues who have compared both EK and QR have been split about 60/40 in QR's favour .

Thanks Kiwiandrew for your reply,

I too got mixed feedback from people who flew with both carriers, but majority preferred Qatar Airways.

I believe Qatar Airways is about 8-10 years old, but stand to be corrected. Fleet and destinations wise they should "equal-up" in numbers by 2012 or so, but not in capacity though as EK has plenty of A380's coming their way

I have flown both. EK Airplanes are slightly more luxurious. However, QR staff are more friendly. Anyways, I find both are good enough, and really difference is not that much (Not considering their destination network).

I have a couple of friends working at EK who told me that EK has internal problems in the management.

Qatar Airways has been relaunched in 1993 so it is about 12 years old.

Thanks
