What Do Pilots Do During Flights?

Sat Oct 29, 2005 1:08 am

Hmmm, I was wondering... What do pilots do during flights aside from the obvious. I mean, once the auto-pilot is on, can they sleep? I must admit it ought to be boring at times.  drunk

They sit, they monitor, they read, they monitor, they communicate with enroute ATC, they monitor, they plan their arrival, they monitor.

See the pattern?

....liaise with the Flight Services Director re cabin service and passengers, list any equipment failures or other items that require attention in the service manual, converse with other aircraft flying in the sector about weather etc.

If the flight is long haul and a redeye, when they get near their destination they bring out their trusted friend - the electric razor (mostly male pilots!).

I was on a ferry flight, YYZ to CBG, we took off about 2100 hours, at about 0300 I woke up and went to the flight station. Where I found the FE asleep at his desk, the FO asleep in his seat and SO reading a magazine. When I asked how we were doing, the SO said "were just following that Canadian DC-10," you could just make out its clearance lights, ahead and below us.

Most of you are right according to the SOP. I cross the pond 3 times a month and once clear of radar we preaty much do anything we want between way point calls (With in reason). Ex shoes off feet on glareshield, read a paper, play cards, take a nap (oopps did i say that) talk about life and wait for the TCAS to go off along with visual traffic checks and staring at the northern lights. When flying within radar coverage somewhat the same but yes we pay a lot more attention to the radio

I know of one CM captain who loves to pull out his laptop on the long flights to EZE or SCL or GRU and show off his porn collection, an FO that flew with this captain once said that he had in his laptop case over 10 porn DVD's and many more short videos in the laptops hard drive, needless to say it was not a boring flight.

My dad (a FX MD-11 Capitan Currently) was on a long hall over the pacfic and went back to sleep in the middle of the flight (the best time). When he came back to the cockpit, he was somewhat annoyed with F/O and second F/O (needed on the flight) when he saw that they had on of the guy's laptops on the glareshied and were watching a film, listening through a splitter and two pairs of headphones. Dad said he didn't really care that they were doing something, but rather that they hadn't told him they were going to do it (I'm sure he'll be doing the same thing when he finally gets a laptop under 20 lbs)

Once on autopilot I normally just relax watch the scenery, chat, monitor the systems, fuel burn etc. If it is a long haul and my girfriend is around I go spend a little time with her then I will go back and check gauges etc carefully avoiding spilling my beer on the instruments , normally I will sleep it off before time for desent.... being a pilot on microsoft simulator is much more laid back
Sorry could'nt resist that, very good trend though, Some crazy stuff probably goes on sometimes that would'nt be admitted. If it is, it probably would be in the form of ' someone I know... or I heard one time...' For the most part probably nothing that would endanger the flight.

I don't have any personal experience in this area but from reading the trip reports here on a.net (there are two pilots right now that are doing excellent and very informative pilot trip reports almost monthly if you care to check them out) and limited real world knowledge I would have to say that, like any job, there is an **official** answer and a **real answer**. Read the TR's and you will know what I mean. There are things that you are supposed to be doing and the official policy I think is very strict about pilots doing anything other than talking, looking out the window, or monitoring the aircraft/flight.

If you remember on Real TV, one captain came out of the flight deck and held a Wet T shirt contest in the cabin during flight. One of the passengers was not impressed and wrote the airline about it.

BTW, if there are jeppesen revisions or new PIFs out, they will often take care of these in flight.

After being on 102 flights this year in the jumpseat, some of what has been posted above is true.

I'm not going to write about everything I saw but on long flights there just isn't a whole lot to do over the water.
  • Read

  • Talk
  • Nap
  • Sleep (another level up from nap when the feet are on the glareshield and the seat is almost flat)
  • Watch DVD on laptop (on crew rest, of course. Not on the Airbus tray table)
  • Gaze at another jet that's out the window going the same direction
  • Share pictures and stories with each one
  • Revisions
  • Think

    To the uninformed observer it might seem like the pilots get paid to sit there and do those things and that is their easy, fun job. Really though, a lot of thinking is going on in their head and that is the main task at cruise. It's not just sit there and let the thing fly itself for the next six hours, it's sit there and monitor what is going on, what is likely to occur next, what options are currently available. Keep an eye on things.

    The answer is simple for me:

    Sit, Relax and Enjoy...

    Simultaneously: follow the flight plan, ETA, route, ATC position reports (when operating in a non-radar environment), Fuel estimations (Very important), scan the engine parameters once at least every 15 minutes and check for variations throughout the flight,call the company for ETA at destination and special services and/or maintenance required.

    Uh... no, there's basically no difference between FEs and SOs, as the titles are used interchangeably. Captain is always right seat, FO (first officer) is always left seat (although I guess sometimes they switch seats), FE/SO is the guy sitting at the FE panel. And believe it or not, FEs are pilots too. There are designated FEs though, and they didn't go on flights, but rather would do the rather lengthy preflight of the airplanes' systems. Those FEs were not always pilots.

    Not sure what you're talking about here. It is the exact opposite.

    CA = Left Seat
    FO = Right Seat

    After the Southwest incident with the naked pilots, some airlines brought up the idea of installing cameras in the cockpit and the union went nuts over it coz of ;'privacy issues'. I wonder what happened to the idea!

    GoBoeing is correct, I was wrong, it is CA (pilot) FO (co-pilot) FE (flight engineer).

    I too have know pilots that were working as flight engineer, however, is not a requirement to be a pilot and they do not get the same pay as pilots.

    Man "Bus Drivers" got it easy. I have set in my cockpit for a logged 11.5 (total 13 hours) 5 point strapped in with a couple of Otis Spunkeyer Chocolate Chip Muffins, 3 cans of pepsi, 4 bottles of water (lavatories after consumption), and a issue of "Maxim" while we were in the FARP. That was a helluva day though Big grin

    That "noise" my friend, is what they used to tune their instruments - on the B707s at FL 320 within +/- 10C of standard atmosphere, the PW engines would generate an almost perfect A (440 Hz)

    The biggest logistical problems woule arise when the captain played cello - mostly on the JAL flights to BOM.

    Not sure what you're talking about here. It is the exact opposite.

    CA = Left Seat
    FO = Right Seat

    Of course you're right, I don't know how I got that mixed up. Pretty embarassing, to be honest with you.
    I'm not pro-Boeing or pro-Airbus, I'm pro-crew all the way.

    With the new in-flight internet link, there are few more possibilities:

    - surfing the net
    - playing WOW
    - chatting
    - email friends and families..

    Oh dear. Don't tell me you spend that long on that game... My friend would love to be a pilot if that's the case..
    It's all about the destination AND the journey.
