Wifi Access In Airports

Sat Oct 29, 2005 4:56 am

I've just recieved a new laptop from work, which has WIFI on it.

Next week I'll be travelling to JNB, which will involve a 3 hour stop over at CDG.

I was wondering if I'd be able to get internet access at CDG, using the WIFI connection.

Also, how do you pay for using WIFI facilities, how do they know you are using it etc.

I'm not sure about CDG but their website should have some information.

Here in the States you almost always have to pay for it though I found a free one in Orlando today. I'll spare you the techno mumbo jumbo as I could detail it greatly but you have to authenticate yourself. The operator can set things up where you are given an IP address but only allowed to go to a certain webpage to register and pay through credit card. After that you will be allowed access. One of the big ones in airports here is T-Mobile. Once you purchase with them you can use it all day (if you just purchased a single day) at any place (airport, Starbucks, Borders bookstore) where they offer the service. Use a personal firewall if you don't have one as their are some not so nice folks out there.

Singapore Changi offers free access throughout the terminal and I was given a card at the JAL lounge in NRT with a onetime username and password for free acess.

WIFI is available at CDG...you pay on line with a creditcard and it gives you access with a password.
Just connect your wireless and click your browser...it will give you access to the rates and minutes.

Wifi available in JNB domestic terminal, after you have passed through security, however there are charges applicable. I'm not sure whether it is available in the International terminal yet. Will find out when I fly out to MEL on Nov 20.

I think there are some parts of the international terminal at JNB which have WIFI access.

Not sure if you have to go into a seperate lounge, which I assume you have to pay to get into. Might be wrong.

MGB80, what are the rates like at CDG?

PIT is free in food court.

If it is then the signal from the food court is pretty strong as I've picked it up in all the B and D terminals I've flown out of.

PHX doesn't even have wi-fi (unless you're in an airline club, like DL's) and ATL doesn't have wi-fi either outside of airline clubs.

You definitively could virtually everywhere in CDG2, providing that you could have an IP from their DHCP. Several time, I could have a perfect radio link, but never ever an IP  Sad

By the way, it's pretty expensive (10 euros per hour), but there also several other operator available via roaming.

I know this is totally off topic, but the cost of Wifi at CDG started me thinking about it. Last week me and my family had breakfast at Newcastle Airport, on our way to Tenerife.

We got two cooked breakfasts, a bowl of cereal, some toast and two cups of coffee. Cost us £23... robbing #astards!

I knew it would be expensive, but my wife insisited we didn't have enough time to get breakfast at home. Don't think she realised just how expensive it would be. I've never let her hear the end of it since.

I don't mind paying a slight premium in an Airport, but sometimes they go beyond the joke!

Wifi price in France is a joke. I saw one time in an hotel in Paris a wifi access @ 23 € per hour. I'd turn off my computer Big grin

UK is definitively an expensive country Big grin
