AirTran Airways To Stop Selling Tickets On Expedia

Sat Oct 29, 2005 1:22 pm

irTran Holdings Inc., parent of AirTran Airways, said on Friday that it will no longer make its inventory and fares available for sale with Expedia Inc., which runs on-line travel agency Expedia.com.

The low-cost carrier said it had entered a multiyear deal with Cendant Corp. to sell tickets through its Apollo and Galileo travel sites. An AirTran spokeswoman said the new deal is an extension of an ongoing relationship with Cendant companies.

Do they have a website like Expedia, open for everybody?

SFOMEX,
yes, they sure do. Amongst them are Orbitz, Cheap Tickets and ebookers. Cendant have been "collecting" companies in the travel biz (hotels, tour operators, travel agencies) like crazy. Check their website cendant.com - you'll be in for a big surprise seeing how many household names are part of this conglomerate.

Happy flying.

They decided to do this because AirTran is pulling out of the WorldSpan GDS, which Expedia relies on. Although Expedia did sign a deal for Sabre to be a secondary source and AT is staying in Sabre. AT will still be on Traveocity.

I heard about this yesterday. This is great news for the sales and customer support departments at Expedia. We may never have to deal with paper tickets or delivery fees for domestic flights again! My job just got better. Of course corporate is going to hurt for it. We used to buy a lot of their seats.

It is ironic that Cendent Corp., which owns parts of Avis car rental, Century 21 Real Estate, hotel/motel chains, and various consumer marketing companies is planning to break up into 4 companies. At least AirTran is transferring business to another e-booking company.

Could it be because Delta owns part of Worldspan and therefore Expedia uses this for their primary inventory? Maybe AirTran doesn't want their full inventory in view of a direct competitor? (Remember AA, Braniff and Sabre?)

WorldSpan is now owned by WorldSpan Technologies, Inc. It's a venture between the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan and CitiCorp.

There is currently a lawsuit between Expedia and Sabre, because although they signed a deal, they have never used Sabre and are now trying to get out of the contract.

Geeze, it's nice of corporate to keep us up on all this. I hate getting from CNN what should be on the company newsletter.

So other than airtran.com where can you get their tickets online?

HAHAHAHA!! Thanks man, I was having a bad day that was a real knee-slapper there!

Isn't this kinda stupid? Expedia, IMHO, is the best booking agent out there, and the only one I'd ever think of using even though here at ABE prices never change from high, higher, and highest anyways. Yeah, Southwest has gotten away without using these for years, but they have more of a "cult following" if you will than Airtran. And we all know how FlyI struggled to sell tickets, and many of us partially blamed it on the same stuff.
