Oldest Airline Liveries

Wed May 17, 2000 2:34 pm

What are the oldest airline color schemes that you can think of that are still in use. Some that come to mind are American, Alitalia, KLM. Any others you can think of?

Current LOT`s livery comes from mid 70`s (I think it was introduced in 1976-1977).

Air China´s livery looks like from the 60s (I know they abolished their communist flag on the tail a decade ago), oldfashioned and ugly. Same about Aeroflots standard livery - it looks even worse.
What about Olympic´s colours? Must be 20 years around or more. Iberia´s paintjob is 20 years old, too (still like it).
And Air France, the grandfather of "white" liveries. A real classic. Over 24 years they changed the typeface only.

Singapore Airlines have not changed their livery to any dramatic degree for a long time.

Ethiopian Airlines' livery dates back to sometime in the Sixties and it really shows - a real classic!

AA's been around quite some time with the silver planes. Southwest has had the same colors since 1971.

Hi! I found out that some airlines still use their liveries from many years, let me tell you:

Alitalia - from early 70's
Air France - From mid 70's
Iberia - From 1974
TAP - From 1978
Kuwait Airways - From mid 70's
Ethiopian - From mid 70's
Royal Air Maroc - From early 70's

Those really need to wash their faces, they're getting quite old!!!

Tristar500 got it: Ethiopian Airlines
It dates back to teh 50s and is -bytheway- still one of the greatest (if not THE) liveries around. It just looks good on every airlines, from Lockheed Herc to Boeing or whatever!!!

I didnt forget Air India! As I was about to post, my computer decided to do its own thing   Anyhow, their current livery dates back to their introduction of the 747. Very classy...I dont think ANYONE has done what they have with their windows...totally unique and almost timeless...I think the only thing they need to modernize is the logotype...Something a little more fancier. Otherwise one of the finer whitetop liveries...

If you watch Boeing documentaries on the 747, or in books about 747s, the Air India plane always shows up or is mentioned.

Caledonian was only formed in 1988, so their livery wasn't thatold.
Monarch's livery was last modified in 1983, but it originally dates from the early 1970s!!!

Actually, Caledonian was formed in 1961 with a DC-7. Later it changed names to British Caledonian when it merged with British United Airways...then the name Caledonian was brought back as a charter arm of Bristish Airways, BA AirTours. Overall their livery hadnt changed much since the early days...just minor modifications...the lion remained...

Caledonian Airways (the last one) was formed in 1988. It was a totally separate venture from the old British Caledonian/Caledonian-BUA/Caledonian company. The aircraft, staff and management were ex-British Airtours and the livery was based on that of British Airways. Granted the lion was kept but that's about it!

This is sort of like the Pan Am situation, would you say Pan Am that operates today was formed in 1999, 1996 or before? They may have the same name as the old airline, and in this case exactly the same livery, but they are not linked.

AirAfrique has a very old livery. There livery is at least from the early 70s, possibly older. Although dated, I think it has class. Often times changing liveries every 10 years really isn't classy, elegant, or smart. South African's present livery is awful compared to the old classic springbok. EgyptAir, revently redid their livery. It's tail looks more appropriate on the Luxor Casino in Las Vegas, what with the flashy blue. It was insitituted in 1998 I think.

While Delta has updated their paint scheme twice in the past few years, many of their older planes still sport the old livery that was introduce din the 60's.

Air India did change their livery in 1989, but reverted back to it in 1993 after customer disapproval.(it was an all white fuselage with a red sash up the tail, with a sun at the top). Other airlines that you may think haven't changed, have 'updated' their livery, but kept the essential identifiers. (you don't think KLM will change the blue fuselage and white tail, do you?)
