Non-stop Flights From NYC To India

Sun Oct 30, 2005 7:52 pm

I realise that CO operates a non-stop service from EWR to DEL using the 772 and that AI flies from both JFK and EWR to India via Europe, but how much potential do you think there is for non-stop flights from NYC to India?

Which routes do you think would warrant non-stop service based primarily on O&D traffic? In my opinion, DEL, BOM, AMD (40% of Indians living in the NY area come from Gujarat, the largest city of which being AMD) and BLR (possibly - a lot of people fly USA-BLR via Europe). I am not too sure about some other cities, such as MAA and ATQ.

What about other cities in India as one-stop flights, like HYD?

Good question

This is completely out of intuition: I think that the nonstops won't be successful at all.No surprise that AC has ceased its nonstop. Relatives of mine said it is insane to be 15 hrs + in a plane. And medical surveys, as a pilot told me, indicate that effects on the body are not favoring.Even a short halt on ground can do miracles here.

But I might be wrong. However, I would only rate them as potentially successful if "amenities" are in suurplus.. something only hard fledged business travellers could afford

If you can sell enough Business class seats then perhaps you can make it profitable. 15 hrs in Biz is no problem at all. . . So fill up Biz and then let people suffer in coach and if it makes money keep on flying.

I'm guessing that the Biz class fares are what will make the route viable. . . True or False?

AC is doing extremely well on its YYZ-HKG flights. ALmost everyday, J class is full.

I don't think that the DEL flights have been this successful. But then again, can't compare YYZ to NYC.

Actually, CO's flights to Delhi are doing very well, as are AA's.

The NY market to India is huge, unlike Toronto. Also, contrary to Toronto, which provides mostly low yield traffic to India, the US provides a great deal of high yield traffic.

Furthermore, the one-stop services to India via Europe seem to be more taxing than a nonstop. You leave the East coast of the US in the evening, only to be woken up at 1 am, EST, for a lousy breakfast a landing, and 2 hours or more in transit (if you're on AI, you're basically stuck on the aircraft for those 2 hours), and then its another 8+ hours to India.

If you had a nonstop that left in the evening, you could actually get a full night's rest (as much as is possible in a Y Class seat). I've done NY-Tokyo nonstops that are about 13 hours and I slept through most of those flights.

you mean an AA connecting stop? AA's ORD-DEL flight doesn't start until a couple of weeks from now....

I'm curious to see how it will do....I would have thought AA had a better chance flying JFK-DEL......the desi population in the NYC area is HUGE!

.but there are enough desis in Chicago....however, they aren't putting enough ads out to promote the flight...for example, they should have a huge billboard somewhere on Devon Ave. (in Chicago) advertising their new flight. Even though many of the rich Indians don't live in the Devon Ave. area, they still go there for shopping......and that would certainly attract some interest.....not to mention, there are probably enough residents in the Devon Ave. area to fill those 777's up (Y-class at least)!

Hopefully I'll be taking that ORD-DEL flight sometime next year.. biggrin

I was hoping to non-rev on this flight as a D3 and be home for Xmas. However, flight connection times from KWI to DEL are absolute crap. Plus you have to have a visa even if you transit the airport. Costs 65 bucks or so, was not worth the hassle, not right now anyway.

Maybe I can give it a go sometime in the spring. I would not mind spending 15+ hours in an AA Flagship Suite...

The routes which i mentioned are possible one stops just as the trend of this thread is to discuss POSSIBLE routes.

My bad, I misread it! Then I'd add a possible JFK-CDG-AMD to the list.

I've heard that those flights are selling out.
Also, AA doesn't need to cater strictly to the ORD area desis. ORD is a North American hub, and they'll have plenty of connecting traffic through ORD.

The success of any longhaul/ultra-longhaul route between India and the US/Canada is the restriction of aircraft range. AC pioneered the North America to India nonstops with their A343/A345 service. During the test period AC realized that any airline flying the route would need rights to overfly Russia. [Initially, the Russian Gov't seemed hesitant to give any Canadian airline overfly rights to India as it may harm Aeroflot's North America-India connection business.] AC also realized that their A343 planes were payload limited on some days. The lead to AC placed an embargo on employee pass travel to DEL. AC solved this payload problem by flying the route one winter with the A345.

Between now and the end of 2010, I doubt that any US based carrier will receive delivery of any ultra-longhaul aircraft, enabling attractive operations to India. Until then the only nontops we will see are route between Northern US gateways (BOS, NYC, DTW, CHI and SEA) and Northern Indian gateways (DEL, ATQ and AMD*) *from US east coast only

Think of these routes
DEL-EWR/JFK
DEL-DTW
DEL-ORD
DEL-SEA
ATQ-EWR/JFK
ATQ-DTW
ATQ-ORD
ATQ-SEA
AMD-EWR/JFK

HYd can support a non stop to EWR or ORD. While the traffic to UK/Europe is increasing, there are far more telugu people settled in the NYC or CHI areas. Will not be surprised if AI starts the route once they get their 777d.
