When Do We Get To See The A380?

Mon Oct 31, 2005 7:55 pm

With the A380 making a stop at Frankfurt recently, does anyone know when they'll be undertaking a "show the aircraft" trip around Europe? More importantly, does anyone know when it'll be coming to LHR?

Must be so hard waiting for it on that side of the pond. What about us?

maybe it will come to Canada in the winter for cold-weather testing and then do day-trips to some U.S. airports...those scheduled to get the A380 anyway.

I'm hoping that being as the engines are RR made it may make the traditional flypast at EMA/Hucknall as previous Airbus aircraft have to show it off to the workers!  cloudnine

Cold weather tests are usually done in Iqualit Nunavut... quite far away from all of us. Hopefully YUL will be included in the day trips you mention since Air France plans on sending it here in 2007.

Yes.. that's not a maybe, it's a fact!  Smile
It will be coming to some little northern town in Canada to do some low temp tests in this winter.
Airbus has already said it.  Wink

Yeah, I guess with the successful completion of the airport compatibilty test at Frankfurt recently, we will be seeing the A380 pretty soon in the UK. With Virgin being a customer, will it (A380) be flying from LGW as well as LHR?

Are there any airports in the states that are capable of having the A380 landing on their runways ?

I think it is said about a trillion of times that the runways usually is no issue. Anywhere a 747, 777 or 340/330 can land and a take off a 380 can do too. She even needs less length than the 747. As the 380 has more wheels the weight for a runway is no problem, only perhaps for bridges or tunnels because the overall weight is important there and not weight per wheel like on a runway or taxiway.

Was reading on a mailing list I'm on tonight that they plan to do an A380 flypast at Derby when it comes to the UK in the near future, to show it off to the Rolls Royce employees.......this from Rolls Royce's marketing manager.

So it seems it will definitely be in the UK, and a flypast at Derby is very likely!

Watch this space!

Umm i hope you know that RR engines are made in Indianapolis,IN. RR as a company, (well the real RR) doesn't exist except in the US, and they make A/c engines in Indy.

Errmm Wrong, They make the Trent series of Aero engines in Derby UK and Today, Hucknall is a production centre but also a Test Facility with numerous static testbeds capable of testing engines up to 140,000lbs thrust. These facilities include the ability to cryogenically freeze engines, simulation of torrential rain, effect of multiple birdstrikes and to purposely induce catastrophic failures such as fan blade release.

The A340 overflew the Hucknall and Derby plants for the employees who made these engines with a Spitfire escort, although I don't disagree that Rolls Royce has a North American arm which deals in Aero engines and Military engines I do disagree with your statement that RR doesn't exist outside the US!

A direct quote from Rolls Royce North American Website.

"Rolls-Royce civil aero engines are designed and built in North America, the UK and Germany, with parts coming from a worldwide manufacturing and supply base. Engines manufactured by Rolls-Royce and partners in North America include the Rolls-Royce AE3007, Williams-Rolls FJ44 and International Aero Engines (IAE) V2500."

I think you'll find RR is listed on the London Stock Exchange and has an offshoot in the USA, not the other way round

Another proof of why not always to trust what you read in the papers!
It's amazing how they can do 2 mistakes in one sentence!

"There are currently two airworthy A380s - the wings of which were designed and built in Filton - and they have so far only landed at airfields in France and Germany."

The wings are designed in Filton, but built in Broughton, North Wales. And also, the A380 landed in Moron in Spain for some noise tests the middle of October (as posted on here)........

Doubt that will happen anytime soon. Riot has spilled over into Toulouse airport and according to news sources one of the A380 have been sat on fire.

I guess the European Media is supressing this info just like they did for some 10 days after the rioting started. Give it another week

I think that was a bit sarcastic..... It was a normal bus that was torched in Toulouse, not an AirBUS.....

It will probably fly over Derby the same time it (hopefully) goes to Filton and Broughton. The Airbus Family Day is on the same day in both places, so it might fly via Derby when it goes up/flies down. That is if it's going to be there! It's been to France, Germany, Spain - now only the UK is missing!!

Hopefully it'll head this way on it's UK tour but well all have to wait and see, I'm sure I'll make the trip to LHR regardless!

I've been keeping a watchful eye on the e-mails I get from EMAG (East Midlands Aviation Group) here in the UK, of which I am a member and not long ago it was awash with rumours that the A380 was possibly going to visit Doncaster Robin Hood (former RAF Finingley) and that it was possibly either flying over EMA and over the RR factories. There are so many rumours ciculating at the moment. Its a case of IF, and WHEN it does occur.
The guy who heads EMAG here usually has access to pretty reliable information and he hasn't posted anything yet. Just gotta wait.
Fingers crossed .
No doubt it'll be a media circus and a camping out over night job should anything like that be confirmed here.  Silly

LHR will be one of the most flown destinations of the 380. So no worries, you will see it soon enough.
QR, EK, QF, SQ, EY are planning to fly to LHR.

Well there are at least two U.S. operators of the A380, so I think there will be a presentation for Fedex and UPS, too.
Maybe cargo is not as glamarous as passenger aircrafts but these two airlines pay with the same money as other customers. So I think there will be a presentation in North America and who knows maybe they gain the interest of future customers I know the outlook is not so good but never say never.
Airbus will at least try.........if they would not have tried with Eastern back then who knows what would have been happened.
Better try and fail as do not try at all  Wink !!!
It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong
