UA Plans To Start Flying JFK-CDG

Thu May 18, 2000 12:00 am

United has filed an application with the US DOT to fly daily, nonstop service between JFK and Paris starting on April 1, 2001. United has been trying to fly this route since 1991, but has not been able to due to the current restrictive agreement in place. UA's latest move aims to replace Tower Air, which recently discontinued service on this route. UA plans to use a 767-300 on the route, the second largest US-Europe market.

Great for United. I'm curious. How does United fill flights at an airport where it does not have a hub? Is the New York area market alone big enough to keep a daily 767 filled? I wonder if United has enough frequent flyers in the New York area even though Delta, American, Continental and US Airways are more dominant?

I am sure that United will easily fill a 767-300 on a daily basis to CDG. I am sure their market research is sound. It is nice to see them add another trans-Atlantic route.

JFK is mostly and O&D market for United. They have transcon flights from LAX and SFO and a few other feeds, both mainline and on Atlantic Coast Airlines. But then there are 7 million people in New York, plus who knows how many more in the surrounding area. i am sure there is a decent enough load factor to fill up a 767-300, and maybe at some point a 777.
