Cancun Airport

Tue Nov 01, 2005 12:26 am

Hi. After 8 days without electricity and all services thanks good I have now... The experience of Wilma was crazy and we are here and recovering of all...
Cancun its a disaster, the airport looks terrible, control tower goes down, FOB its destroyed and the terminal 1 the one for charters also...
Many new constructions on the airport was destroyed, but now after hard work its going back... The operations start to be normal and there was allot of planes come to rescue tourist and people from all the world... The operations after the hurricane was increible without communications and radar...
Well Cancun is recovering now and hope the airport to... By the way does any one knows which special flights came to CUN after the hurricane...?

Do you have any photos of the airport to post? I was supposed to go down there this week but the trip was canceled.

The ASUR report - click on the one dated 31 October, it's a .pdf.:

http://www.asur.com.mx/asur/ingles/prensa/prensa.asp

Basically, it says that some commerical flights have resumed. They do not yet know when the airport will be fully back to normal.

cheers

Acording to NOTAM CUN is closed to normal operations, the only flights operating are from the army, navy and rescue flights, MX is sending flights with help and food with the 8XXX flight numbers, QA has flights cancelled, and also night flights are restricted; hopefully for November 5 CUN will get normal operations.

Cheers

US Airways/America West ran two flights last Thursday, one from Charlotte and one from Phoenix. They carried water, food and other supplies to Cancun and returned with stranded passengers. It was reported that they would do the same thing on Friday, but I did not see any local press coverage.

Just read on www.elnorte.com, CUN is already open, as for rescue flights, MX send a flight MEX-MID-CUN-ATL-MEX and CUN-ATL-MEX, also rescue fligts to CZM for passengers and bring food and watter to CUN.

Cheers

I think CUN well has the resources to pull it off. Needless to say, that the CUN/CZM area is very important to the nation's economy so alot of attention will but put into rebuilding. What a pity this had to happen though, these hurricanes cause quite the havoc this year.
There is something special about planes....

I ve been down here for 11 years, and I must say one thing. I went out to look at the city the morning after Wilma passed thru and it really looked like a bomb had gone off. The hotel zone was preety banged up. But I´m so impressed with the way the city is being re build. The pace is extremely fast. Everyday I find more and more shops and institutions that have re opened. 2 days ago 5000 hotel room in the hotel zone alone were already ready for guests. We had electricity 2 days after the storm and water soon after(my mom in Miami says shes been out of electricity for 6 days and they have no idea when its coming back) So It is a possibility that by the 15th of december you may have 75% of the hotel rooms ready. Plans call for the total redoing of the hotel zone... It should be coming out a lot nicer that it used to be!!!! However, there are some hotels that probably will have to be demolished and re built. So those will take a couple of years.......American has cut its schedule though. Only 3 flights to DFW 2 to Miami and one to ORD with the december schedule change.......... I think that may be changing as the hotels reopen for business.

After sending charters down to fly out stranded passengers, United has cancelled all Cancun flights until mid-December. They don't expect tourist traffic to get back to normal until then.

That's the only positive thing that hurricanes bring, 'redoing'. After the devastion, comes the remodeling. Places usually look a lot nicer afterwards, but in the mean time, many people loose their jobs. I've read on several websites that the reconstruction of Cancun and Cozumel is going at full speed.

Thanks Traindriver...
Yes we are OK and also we are recovering fast, its increible to see all after 1 week and its running good, the army and navy do a great job, helping people and cleaning the city, there are great people, and also the electricity came very fast, there are more of 2200 people working for the electricity...
Today I went to see the airport, the main radar didn't work, the tower still there and looks normal, its to many damage on the FOB and the charter area... Hope CUN its ready for December to receive all our nice tourist...

Cancun's people is extraordinary. My family, which entirely live there, have described me with details how amazing the rebuilding process is. I haven't visited them in almost 20 days and won't be able to do it for at least other 10 or 15 but I know they are doing fine. Rest assured that Cancun's comeback will be great.

Hope AACUN, Cun757 and all .netters from there are okay.

Crushed to hear of these problems at Cancun, I have had many pleasant visits to Q.Roo.

I have a good friend whose niece was stranded in Cancun by the hurricane; she made her way to Merida, and my friend flew to Merida from Dallas to pick her up.

Long trip across the gulf, Merida to Houston (HOU) in a Bonanza, all at night!

He was impressed and gratified at the strong assistance and cooperation he encountered from the Mexican officials at all levels in putting together his flight.
...three miles from BRONS, clear for the ILS one five approach...

FedEx sent a relief flight on Saturday 10/29. It departed from Toluca (TLC) with 138,000 Lbs (106,100 Lbs w/o tares) of relief material donated by the Mexican Red Cross and Fundación Azteca. Equipment used was DC10-30F.

Cancun is alive and kicking !!

As a foreigner living in Cancún (where I run a travel agency - mostly with export business, not receiving tourists), I must say I am very much impressed and delighted at the speed and dedication with which the Mexican authorities and utilities in general have put this place back in business.

No joke, the day after Wilma you would think Baghdad was Cannes compared to the horrible destruction and devastation that engulfed this proud city. Barely 10 days after, not only is almost the entire town with electricity and running water (plus internet... !) but the airport, badly hit including its control tower, has not only electricity but its avionics and communications systems are running accordingly. Night operations were restarted last night and it is expected that, by the weekend, 50% of normal pre-Wilma regular flight operations will be performed. The charter terminal is, however, out of business for the time being as is 95% of the all-inclusive package holiday which kept the airport so lively.

My words of praise and commendation to this generous nation and its great people !

It is a great thing your friend did, but probably not the smartest thing, crossing the Gulf at night with a single rubber band.
