A very condensed account of the early years of aviation in Brazil:

The first flight in Brazil was in 22 October 1911. Edmonde Planchu (Alberto Santos-Dumont's mechanic) flew over Mauá square in Rio de Janeiro, crashed into the sea just off the square.

First airline was Condor Syndikat, doing flights from Rio de Janeiro to Florianópolis with a Dornier Wal hydroplane (then with a German registration, D-1012) in 1927. When Varig was founded in June 1927, they took over the Dornier, baptised as "Atlântico", and took the first national registration: P-BAAA.

First regular route was also started in 1927, Porto Alegre - Pelotas - Rio Grande, in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul.

First international route, starting on November 1927: Paris-Rio de Janeiro on French airline Aeropostale.

First Brazil-USA route was started in 1929, Rio - Buenos Aires - New York by Nyrba do Brasil, later to become Panair do Brasil.

VASP was founded in 1933 and started regular flights from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro. From then on, air transport enjoyed several years of sustained growth. By 1960, Brazil had one of the largest air transport networks in the world, second only to the USA.
