No Power This Hour In The Tower At FLL

Wed Nov 02, 2005 9:41 am

The commercial power at FLL has failed, as have the generators, as have the battery-powered stuff. Numerous diversions...

Yes, we now have power, we are not sour, we will bring flower(s)...  Wink

(Now, don't let it go out again--we don't like diverting the same flights twice...)  Wink

Once again the FAA's complete redundancy fails, and I'll bet safety was never compromised. Cough...cough...coughbullshit.
I don't understand everything I don't know about this.

You do, of course, realize that there are many commercial airports in the US (not to mention busy GA-only) without any ATC services? As long as the proper precautions are taken (e.g. proper spacing made by TRACON controllers and use of the CTAF/UNICOM frequency), it's not that big of a deal to operate without the Tower.

Oh really? How about 9/11 when a bomb threat was phoned into LAX tower and the FAA was able to safely move tower communications to the old tower using a handheld radio and cell phones? It showed that even a complete evacuation is planned for

True, but with higher traffic volumes at FLL, that's alot of phone calls to ATC...

But, did FLL have (1) an old tower, and (2) a handheld radio?

Quite right, I suppose I spoke from the standpoint of safety rather than operational efficiency. The extra precautions required are sure to cause delays at high traffic airports, but it's possible to still operate safely.

How true... Besides, resistance is futile (if less than 8 ohms...)

Not knowing anything about FLL, I'm speaking off the cuff here, but I'm guessing they're far more likely to have one of these than the other  Wink
