Winter Open Skies This Year Also In India

Wed Nov 02, 2005 11:58 am

Despite rumours of the winter open skies not happening due to liberalised bilaterals, it seems the Indian govt is going ahead this time too with some slight restrictions. November to March, airlines can bring in bigger capacity aircraft during the 5 months, however additional frequencies is only from December 01 to Jan 31 and not for the entire period.

That is good news. Despite all the increase in capacity, fares are still sky high for laggards like me who have not bought tickets yet.

That said, its pretty late in the game, I wonder other than EK who else is going to take advantage of this time around?

Has any airline announced increased services under this year's open-sky policy?

A friend of mine bought his LAX-BOM economy ticket on AI for $1850, leaving on Dec 16 and returning on Jan 2. This is the most he has ever paid for travel to India in December. He was getting a cheaper deal on Emirates but didn't want to fly them as he is uncomfortable flying through Middle East and dealing with a 2 stop flight.

What's LAX-BOM economy like on the "over Pacific" one-stop routes? I think that would have been cheaper, currently 1100-1500 dollars.

We have a revised Fog Schedule covering 15/12/2005-15/02/2006.
Fog at Del normally hits by Last week Dec or 1st week Jan.
Tough times for BOM.

His agent quoted him even higher prices on SQ and MH. I think the fares you are quoting are for travel starting from India.

Please ask him to take a look at the non online carriers like Eva for all stations, Korean (for non-BOM), or even UA via Bangkok. All these airlines connect on to Indian Airlines (IC) for a lot of smaller airports in India (including PNQ w.e.f. 13th Dec'05) at overall rates which are cheaper than flying direct.

Yes, some of these low-rates are quoted from India, but you can ask for PTAs at a slightly higher cost for journeys originating elsewhere.

Good luck.
