Air Finland's (FIF) HEL - BKK Service

Thu Nov 03, 2005 5:37 am

FIF used to provide charter flights only from HEL to Thailand but this winter it has a weekly regular service HEL - BKK ( on B752, 219 seats, via MCT).

Their internet booking offered rather high prices and B752 doesn't sound tempting - though 8 seats less than on Finnair's B752 - but perhaps the demand for this service from HEL is big enough. And I quess most of the seats are still reserved for the holiday operators.

This winter there are days HEL has three departures to BKK (AY, FIF), plus the charters to Phuket etc. Finns do love the Thai sun...

That does not sound like fun, how much more is the AY flight on an MD-11?

AY recently ran a campaign for BKK, EUR 499 return by Dec 4 or something. I assume FIF will be around 700-900 rt, AY is more on normal APEX fares. But TLL-HEL-BKK is something like 700-800 on AY.

Though i can't see much difference between AY M11 3-4-3 zone and these 757s - all the same cramped crap.

Let's see if this will be OF's make-it-or-brake-it chance. From what I've heard they are not doing very well financially, never have been. And next spring Sterling will jump into their market by basing two planes at HEL to fly European holiday routes.

Yes, I got that AY's BKK campaign ticket for 499 euros (MD-11).

Have to say I found BA's old 747 (LHR - SFO) more uncomfortable than AY's MD-11, one inch less room for my legs.

Wonder why AY always offer lower price than SK?
Maybe they only have the oldies..MD11s? When are they going to buy some 343s? :S
Let's just blame it on yields.

Finnair's flights to BKK are often full in mid winter, no hopes for deals like that from HEL that time - despite that they have an extra flight some week days.

MD-11 is perfect for they purpouses at the moment in Asia, cargo capacity is one key thing.

No signs that their next wide body would be A340, rather A350 or 787.

Oldies? Generally AY's fleet is younger than SK's.

Quoting Andaman;

"Generally AY´s fleet is younger than SK´s."

The short - medium haul a/c´s of AY are younger than SK´s, but not the long haulers (330 n 340) How "young" is the latest MD11 in AY fleet?

BTW, I´m a huge fan of the MD11..

Yes sure A330/340 are younger then MD-11, though that plane type isn't any "grand mother" yet, first ever MD-11 flight took place 1990.

Personally not the biggest fan of MD-11, maybe because that's the most obvious choice from HEL and grass is always greener somewhere else...
but been happy for the wide range of non stop flights to Asia from HEL, though.

I quess AY itself can't complain, Asian routes with MD-11s have been a money machine for the company, and they seem to be expanding.
This winter all AY's MD-11s get new angled lie-flat seats to business class,
I hope I get a chance to try one and change my opinion
