New WN Special Theme A/C Pt. 2

Thu Nov 03, 2005 10:26 am

Does anyone know whatever happened with this, it kinda went to the wayside. Are we taking delivery of it soon or was it just a "false sighting"?

I heard WN was dressing a plane up in ATA colors and mascaradaing it out of MDW as a TZ flight with WN own staff aboard. The only way to tell was that the plane was not a 737-800 and it leaves from a WN gate, which they explain away by saying that all of the TZ gates were in use. They then fly the people to their desitnation with slow, crappy service so that people begin to hate TZ further strengthening WNs take-over bid.

I also heard that they were making an Airlines.net themed plane on the insistance of the Airliners.net faction of the WN Pretorian Guard. It will have "Wright is Wrong CJ" painted on the side and will do low speed passes of the area around DAL, with few houses (OK, I head it was only one) recieveing special attention. It will be painted in the blue/darkblue A.net colors and the IFE will have PTV at each set from which you can particapte in the airliners.net discussions on the Wright Amendement. And since WN is a no frills airline, access to smilies will cost $2.

One boeing 737......$45,000,000
Jet fuel per flight .... $10,000
Having the NBA to pay for your paintjob....priceless.

That's one slam dunk for WN.  wink

Somehow, I just dont think you can haul out the Mastercard and slap down a cool $45 million for a B737, not unless you are Bill Gates or something.  Smile

The fuel, sure, but the plane? I dont know...

It's gonna be worth having the Wrong Amendment repealed just to hear what Kevin Cox, CJ, and Boeing7E7 have to say about it.

My predictions:

Kevin Cox will mysteriously vanish. He will be executed Darth Vader style by the CEO of AA for "failing him for the last time".

CJ will comment how repeal of the Wright Amendment is "protectionism" for WN. Then his head will explode.

Boeing7E7 will launch into a rant about how this will destroy DFW's chances to improve the litany of problems they have. As if the future of the entire airport rests on WN moving there. Almost everybody will recognize it as BS and roll their eyes in unison.

Southwest Airlines Launches New NBA-Themed Specialty Airplane

Thursday November 3, 11:30 am ET

Slam Dunk One Marks First Southwest Specialty Plane with a Partner in 17 Years

Three Ronald McDonald House Families on Maiden Voyage to Los Angeles as Part of NBA CARES

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 2005--Southwest Airlines unveiled its first new specialty airplane with a marketing partner in 17 years, the NBA-themed Slam Dunk One, it was announced today by Southwest Airlines President Colleen Barrett, NBA Commissioner David Stern, NBA legends Bill Russell, Dominique Wilkins, Clyde Drexler, Bob Lanier, Bill Walton and George Gervin and WNBA legend Rebecca Lobo. The first and only other customized Southwest plane dedicated to a marketing partner honors Shamu of Sea World fame, and has been in service since 1988. Southwest also has a fleet of six specialty aircrafts dedicated to various states and one dedicated to the Ronald McDonald House.

The only plane of its kind in all of sports, Slam Dunk One is emblazoned with an NBA basketball going through a hoop on the forward portion of the fuselage. The ball is trailed by an orange wave that starts from the back of the plane making it appear as if it is being shot into the basket. Slam Dunk One is emblazoned on the nose of the plane. The plane has a customized interior with each of the 30 NBA team logos adorning the overhead compartments and a custom windscreen featuring a panel commemorating today, the date of the aircraft's maiden flight.

The NBA and Southwest Airlines expanded their marketing partnership in July, and Slam Dunk One is the first product of the broader relationship. The multi-year agreement establishes new community outreach efforts and increases Southwest advertising through NBA media to reach the league's loyal base of trendsetting fans.

Slam Dunk One will go into regular rotation throughout Southwest's 61-city network. The special plane also will be used in ongoing charitable activities and special events conducted by the NBA and Southwest.

"The rare step of creating a specialty airplane with a partner demonstrates our strong commitment to the NBA partnership," said Barrett. "This partnership provides us with unique opportunities to convey our spirit and pride to our Customers through a subject they feel passionate about...NBA basketball."

"The NBA and Southwest Airlines share a common passion for community outreach and a willingness to take innovative steps to serve our fans and customers," said Stern. "As a larger than life symbol of our partnership, Slam Dunk One will further our efforts in providing unique fan and customer experiences and a new means of enriching our communities with special outreach programs."

Slam Dunk One, a Boeing 737, will fly a special charter flight as its maiden passenger voyage today from Dallas to Los Angeles carrying three families from the Dallas Ronald McDonald House. Once in Los Angeles, the families will receive a Shoot For Hope experience which includes receiving tickets to an NBA game (Suns @ Lakers), visiting with NBA players and legends, a chance to see warm-ups courtside, and special gifts.

The Shoot For Hope program with Southwest Airlines is part of NBA CARES, a global community outreach initiative that will feature the league, players and teams raising and contributing more than $100 million for charity, donating more than one million hours of hands-on volunteer service to communities worldwide, and building more than 100 places where kids can learn and play over the next five years.

The following special guests and their families will be riding on Slam Dunk One and will receive a Shoot For Hope experience from the NBA and Southwest Airlines:

Jonathan Rangel (17, San Angelo, TX) -- At 12 years old Jonathan was diagnosed with a benign tumor in his arm that was wrapped by his arteries (Parkes Weber Syndrome), meaning doctors were unable to remove the tumor without risking Jonathan's life. Jonathan travels to Boston every three months for surgery to block some of the blood vessels feeding the tumor. Jonathan is a positive person who believes he was given this disease because he can handle the situation better than most people. Jonathan is a big NBA fan and his favorite player is Dirk Nowitzki.

Andy Noland (15, Beaumont, TX) -- Due to Spina Bifada, Andy is unable to walk and is in a wheelchair, but he doesn't let that stop him. Andy is currently a freshman in high school, where he is the varsity football team trainer. The Noland family was affected by Hurricane Rita and have recently traveled back home to Beaumont after staying at the Ronald McDonald House for three weeks. Andy loves basketball and his favorite player is Kobe Bryant.

Cody Miller (14, Port Neches, TX) - Cody was diagnosed with a type of Muscular Dystrophy known as Intermediate Spinal Muscular Atrophy or SMA Type 2 at the age of three. Due to the disease, Cody is in a wheelchair but he doesn't look at himself as disabled. Cody is a high school freshman who enjoys meteorology. Currently the family is staying in Dallas but is originally from Port Neches, where 75 percent of their business and home were damaged by Hurricane Rita. Cody is also an NBA fan and his favorite player is Kobe Bryant.

Good for WN and the philanthropic part of this. Very nice gesture. Can't wait to see pics of it.

It still strikes me as funny that WN is the "official" airline of XYZ league, yet doesn't do charters of teams.

If I'm not mistaken they will leave 3 planes in standard ochre colors to commemorate the first three cities they served--Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Not sure if they will all be -700s or one of each type.

All 441 aircraft have the Spirit Interiors...

By my count, 303 are in Canyon Blue (or special schemes), leaving 138 left to go. Subtract the 3 that are to stay in the original colors, and that's 135 left to paint. This includes two of the older Shamus (N501SW and N507SW) will also soon get Canyon Blue (all over), as those two have been replaced by N713SW and N715SW which are now Shamus, in addition to the original N334SW.

What the NBA needs to do is do away with the retarded looking baggy uniforms most players wear. This is a pro league of adults not a teen fashion show. I say go back to the above the knee shorts and tank top that fits one person. Maybe they can win back some fans. Other than that who cares what they wear outside of the arena.

Where is the plane? where do I see it?  Smile

Quoting Runway27Right (Reply 45):
Alrighty then, all that's left is to post a schedule here

It appears "Slam Dunk One" entered service yesterday and ended up at SMF. Today, it is completing SMF-SNA-LAS-BNA-MHT-MCO

As of 12:45pm today (Pacific time) the schedule for the next two days is

Tomorrow, 11/7: MCO-MHT-TPA-FLL-JAX-BWI-BNA-BHM

Tuesday, 11/8: BHM-BWI-PVD-BNA-SANthumbsup  )-SJC-SEA

I'm off Tuesday, but I'm sure I'll head down there to see it. Or hmm...maybe I'll call mom and tell her I'm coming home to San Jose this week...  Wink

Lets hope things don't change.  pray
