Spirit To Start FLL-PUJ

Fri Nov 04, 2005 10:41 am

Spirit Airlines will launch daily non-stop service between Fort Lauderdale and Punta Cana on 10 December 2005:

Schedule:

NK 1507 FLL 1105-1425 PUJ 319 Daily
NK 1380 PUJ 1530-1715 FLL 319 Daily

The introductory fares are $98 r/t in coach and $198 r/t in business(!). This will be the only FLL-PUJ service, although both American Airlines and LANChile offer MIA-PUJ service. By March 2006, Spirit will be flying non-stop from Fort Lauderdale to 23 cities:

Atlantic City, New Jersey
Atlanta, Georgia
Cancun, Mexico
Chicago-O'Hare, Illinois
Dallas, Texas
Detroit, Michigan
George Town, Grand Cayman
Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos
Kingston, Jamaica
Los Angeles, California
Montego Bay, Jamaica
Nassau, the Bahamas
New York City-LaGuardia, New York
Orlando, Florida
Providence, Rhode Island
Providenciales, Turks & Caicos
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
San Juan, Puerto Rico
San Salvador, the Bahamas
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Tampa, Florida
Washington-Regan, D.C.

Service to Mexico City will be launched in June 2006, and expect to hear an announcement regarding a daily Fort Lauderdale-Las Vegas flight in the not so distant future. And, despite the fact they are relatively young to the region, they are the only airline that offers non-stop service between the US and both San Salvador, the Bahamas and Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos.

I've got some money that the airplane used for CUN will be redeployed on this route until CUN is back up.

FLL-CUN will be resuming in a matter of days. I believe they are looking at the service resuming on Saturday or Sunday.

I am thinking that NK might be keeping an M80 or 2 on the line that was going to be parked through the end of the Caribbean peak in order to grab some of these new markets. Either way, it's another good market for them and yet another option for PVD travelers...

Spirit's finances got pounded with the latest hurricane. This is an effort to shore up some cash, just like $9 fare, and curb the cash hemmorage. I wonder if NK got a tour operator to back them in them in this market? And from what I heard, this is the plane that was used for CUN.

How? FLL-CUN resumes in a few days. Maybe its the plane from DTW-CUN, which may take longer to resume.

Maybe. I don't know what route it actually flew. PBB ran a piece about how finances aren't looking too good at NK, which adds to the cursory comments I've heard of late.

I'm sure the weather hasn't exacly helped NK's efforts - I just hope not to the point that some of us might be fearing...

I like NK's plan and would really like to see them have a chance to make it work/grow.

Spirit Airlines is doing fine. Their weekly message to employees two weeks ago emphasized this and talked about what has been said, and exaggerated, in the press.

Mark- I rarely post and almost always agree with you, but not here. I wouldn't put much stock into what management tells employees. They're privately held, so there's no way to publicly comment on their finances.

That is true. And while they have clearly been adversely affected by the recent hurricane seasons, they are not in dire straits. By saying they are doing fine I am not implying they are profitable, I'm just implying that they are stable.

Spirit Airlines' First Rescue Flight Takes Off to Cancun

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 27, 2005--Spirit Airlines, the leading low cost carrier to the Caribbean, today is running its first rescue flight to and from Cancun, Mexico.

Spirit is working closely with the Mexican Government and Cancun Airport officials in order to take Spirit Airlines' customers out of Cancun.

The first flight took off at 10:35AM from Fort Lauderdale, with supplies and water, bound for Cancun to pick up the first 150 customers. Once in Fort Lauderdale, customers will continue on to their destination through Spirit's Fort Lauderdale hub. Spirit will run two rescue flights on Friday.

Spirit is planning to resume scheduled service as soon as practical and as early as Saturday.

Spirit recently announced its change policy for customers holding reservations to Cancun now and into the future. Customers may change their plans and choose any other of the 10 Caribbean or Bahamian destinations served by Spirit without paying a change fee by calling 1-800-772-7117. Any decrease in fare will be returned to the customer in the form of a future flight credit and any increase in fare will be charged to the customer.

A little off-topic, but where can one find the aircraft type flown on each of NK's routes? I have not been able to find this and it is really bugging me. Any help?

Actually, that might be true... although they plan on resuming the DTW-CUN and FLL-CUN... I fail to see the TPA-CUN in the sked anymore. That a/c was originally suppose to originate in ACY in the morning and go ACY-TPA-CUN, however, in the Dec sked it looks like the TPA flight goes back to afternoons which leaves me to believe TPA-CUN might not happen any time soon.
