Air Canada Engine Fire On Takeoff...

Sat Nov 05, 2005 11:49 am

Woah...!!

I live just minutes from YYC and just viewed a AC A32X that had it's left engine on fire and flaring out (approx 6:42pm MST) ... I saw this from my living room window as I can see departures from runway 10. The engine was clearly in flames and it was popping loudly... the aircraft was struggling but quickly circled around to head back.. should be an emergency landing.

It circled back to land on 16... anyone have any news on this?

Few updates...

I've asked for the WS thread to be deleted, as it turns out it was actually an Air Canada A320 that returned to YYC after engine flareout...

The aircraft was escorted by firetrucks to the A terminal... no images as of yet... no other details to report.

Sorry, my bad... it was an A319 upon further inspection of the few images I have on my point & shoot...

From my window it was hard to tell exactly what it was at first...

WOW...

YYC has had its share of incident in the last little while... both engine flareouts.... (AK 737-900 and now the AC A320)

someone better check the fuel mix at that airport!

On a serious note...glad that the aircraft landed safely! Any word what kind of evac. (if any) they had to do?

I guess that fact that it was nice and dark didn't help either, eh?  Smile

I raced out there as soon as I heard about it. Got there just after it had landed. I drove over to the terminal and there was nothing going on around any of the Air Canada Airbus'. One was parked at static, and three were at the gate. Nothing seemed unusual considering what had just happened.

As far as I know it was a birdstrike. The #1 engine was horribly chewed up around the inside of the cowling, and all of the 1st stage fan blades were damaged (one of the blades had about 20% of the tip missing). I was a little surprised the whole thing didn't come apart, but what the hell do I know  Smile

Here's some colourful wording from the Calgary Harold regarding the Alaska incident in their story about the AC issue last night:

"It's the second aircraft to be grounded at Calgary International Airport this week. Alaskan Airlines 737 was put out of commission Sunday morning when the second engine of the plane burst into flames as it was headed for the runway."

I didn't recall it BURSTING into flames.. lol

Wow,

... I was at YYC just before 6pm last night. Glad to hear everything went good. I "love" it how the media makes such a drama out of everything. YYC has a lot of bird activity. Every ATIS mentions it. "...Caution, migratory bird activity around the vecinity of the airport... inform ATC that you have information ...

Something we all have to watch out for.

Cheers

Did you read what one of the passengers said ? He said everyone laughed and joked. I don´t believe this, do you ?

lastnight Global interviewed a passenger who said everything was calm. The crew handled it well, and just stated that a bird had been injested, and that the plane would be circling around to land shortly.

Overall, a job well done.

I'm flying Air Canada to Toronto, then I'll be there for two weeks with sidetrips to NY and LA, all on AC. I flew them for the first time a few months ago YUL-YYZ in June and I really liked them, very organised, clean plane (A320), flew like it was on rails. While I've heard some pretty spotty reports of inflight service (esp longhaul) whereby they seem to be doing their best to emulate the service standards offered by their US cousins, I would expect an inflight situation like a bird strike + an engine fire to be a complete non-event on an airline like AC.

Really looking forward to being back in Toronto; rumours of an a.net meetup on the 20th as well.

Whoa!
Lucky, it is back in one piece... yeah, sometimes it is hard to tell whether it is A319 or A320 at angle and especially when it is getting darker at that time.

Glad all are okay!

I don't believe the reports that people were laughing and joking on board. That's just plain stupid. OK, so you are sitting in your seat, looking out the window seeing a huge ball of fire, and you turn to your neighbor and start laughing and making jokes. Id like to get a copy of the radio transmissions though.
Cheers,

So does this mean in-flight *hot* meals and in-flight entertainment are back on Air Canada domestic???

Can they cook it quickly enough for the executive class meal?
