FedEx ATR72

Earlier today a friend of mine nailed the first FedEx ATR72. Seemingly it replaced the Fokker 27 that was being used on feeder flights to/from Campinas VCP

Moutain Air Cargo has been flying the ATR 42 out of BNA for several months now for FedEX.

I have seen an ATR-42 out of Seattle operated by Fed Ex. Are they truly Fed Ex planes or operated by a subsidiary?

If it was Seattle, it was an Empire Airlines ATR 42 you saw. I think the planes are owned by Fedx Corporate, but operated by subsidiaries

I wonder why they went with the 42 instead of the 72 cargo variant.
I'm not a real aeronautical engineer, I just play one on Airliners.net.

Probably because these 42s were more readily available in used quantities versus the 72, and therefore cheaper to buy.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

They start flying in the route vcp-eze-vcp on Friday Nov 11. Those pic are from the proving run that they are doing in south america.

42 & 72 both come factory equipped with a usable cargo door. They just wait till the seats corrode out and replace them with freight.

I am not sure what the difference is between a Cessna 208 and a ATR42 as far as usable cargo volume and payload but it appears to be about double. That would appear to be a significant increase in payload on a feeder route.

I might also add that the last few times that I have been on a 42/72 with less that full load of passengers they have moved passengers forward because of CG issues. I wonder if that would be a sticking point with freight service as the ATR appears to have more sensitive CG issues than other turboprops that I have been on.

The payload is 2.5 times the payload of the Caravan.
