Aer Lingus Granted Washington Route

Fri May 19, 2000 12:03 am

In a press release today, Aer Lingus have confirmed that they have been allowed to start code-sharing with AA, from June. In the same release they also acknowledged that they have been tentatively granted route authority to serve the DUB-SHN-Washington/Baltimore route from Sept 6th. The route is subject to final sign off, but that is not expected to take long or cause any problems. For the winter months the route will be served 3 times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from Dublin via Shannon, and will be expanded to a daily service next summer.
Guess we were wrong Kai Tak, they were given the route without the usual fuss about the SHN stop-over.
It will be interesting to see how the route does over the winter?
See you later

Good news; I'm glad they got the route. There's no sense in punishing Aer Lingus simply because the government doesn't have the interest to develop transatlantic links - or even to lift the obstacle to further development. This will be an interesting departure for the airline and it says a lot for the economics of the 330 that they can think about boosting capacity to a daily operation by next Summer. It's also unusual to be starting a service so late in the season.

I'm looking forward to it and good luck to Aer Lingus; here's hoping it works well. And you never know; maybe at least some of next Summer's flights will be nonstop.
