Crew Pairings

Fri May 19, 2000 2:26 am

How are pilots partnered up? It would seem to me as though pilots should work together in groups, and develop a sense of comradery. I guess my main question is, do pilots fly with the same people, or do they fly with someone different every day?

Depends, most of the time crews are paired up for a trip. Trips last anywhere from 1 to 4 days at my company. We typically swap crews each trip, but on some rare occasions the planning department will place crews together for a month at a time.

On my equipment at my domicile we had 80 crews at one time. You can meet most of those people over the course of 6 months. After that it seems like you are always flying with someone you know.

For example at CO we bid our schedule for a month at a time. At EWR on the B757 we have a 167 lines of flying in June and those lines will be awarded to a CA, and a FO in senority order with regards to choise. Once the lines are assigned we will have a opportunity to trade our trips on the computer with other pilots, or trips that were not covered due to vacations, sickness, training, etc. We have the chance to trade trips all month long, or pickup extra flying for overtime if we like. So our original line is with the same other person, however that can and often changes throught out the month.
