Lagos Runway Problems Again

Sun Nov 06, 2005 11:05 pm

What is it with the runway at Lagos.

Again BA are having to change planes (74 to a 76), and delay a few cause of the state of the runway there.

Did the 2 accidents last week have anything to do with it at all.

I know a few weeks ago the same thing happened, but i thought they had fixed it, seems not

(sorry if this has been posted before, i did a seach but only saw about the 2 incidents last week)
Where does the time go???

KL588 arrived in AMS at 10pm iso 06.00am yesterday, because of this problem. Yesterdays departure to LOS was cancelled for the same reason.

I wonder if the airlines will claim the extra costs to the Nigerian airport authorities.

More Potholes/Divits.

Repaired Divets have re-ap/peared on the edges and end of the Rwy.

As the 767 has a norrower wheel base and requires short braking distance, it's safer to use them.

BA/LH/AF cannot claim compensation from Nigeria.

These Airlines signed new deals in the Summer and negoiated deals which saw them get minimal rates in exchange for the droppong of some penalty clauses.

KLM can claim, there contract is up for renewal next year.

It was pretty busy at T4 today with the Lagos a/c change, for the foreseeable future the equipment will remain a 767 and no tickets are being sold to Lagos until Thursday, not sure what the reasoning is behind that one.

Really crazy stuff going on in Lagos though, was speaking to some cabin crew today who told me about 2 weeks back at BA 744 had to wait 5 hours for a stand!! Something to do with the electricity in LOS.

Hopefully they'll sort out the runway problem there asap!

For Christ sake, it's bad/embarrassing enough that an airport of a major city (a country in this case) can't provide basic services (catering, supplies), now even the basic infrastructure isn't working, it looks more like the end of the world scenario. What the hell has the govt been doing?

Also wonder why the neighboring countries, even North African states haven't taken advantage of the situation, unlike BA, AF, and LH that need to overnight crews somewhere, they can go to LOS with narrow bodies, turn around within a working day.

You're right, but Lagos is one of the world's most dangerous and crime-ridden cities. Corruption abounds. Poverty is rampant. Westerners are not safe to venture out of the airport terminal (as a general rule).

So the airport reflects the hapless nature of the city and country it's in.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

That would be why amadeas is showing WL for all LOS flts for the nxt week. Was trying to guess why it was doing that.

Suppose it is wl as the plane has changed from a 777 and 747 to a 767. Not as many seats to fill so stopping short now, rather than bump people off the flt on the day
Where does the time go???
