19 Year Old's Airline - First Flight Today

Mon Nov 07, 2005 9:52 pm

Saw this on the BBC site:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hampshire/4413370.stm

Anybody know why the Oxford - Cambridge route was ditched? I remember reading about that one in the local paper when I used to live in Cambridge.

Anyone know the reg of the aircraft he is using?

I see he's now looking at EDI & CWL ex IOM. What happened to BLK (as on their website)?

I think it would be a real fun thing to him pull this off with a hefty profit when the US legaicies can't make a buck to save their sorry backsides.

The article states regular flights aren't starting yet - presumably this was a promotional flight.

The website now says both flights (IOM-SOU & IOM-BLK) are starting on 21 Nov. What happened to the 7th Nov start date that was published?

Regardless of what the future holds (and let's hope it's bright), this venture has got off the ground, which is more than most of doom-mongerers predicted.

Well done and fingers crossed!  bigthumbsup

May be cheeky, but it is actually out of date. It says april and may megadeals and also the cheapest flight on BE these days costs £20 one-way.

I guess it was a offensive on the eve of alpha one's launch of oxford-cambridge services, which we of course now know, never occured.

Mr Halstead, who secured an air transport licence at the Oxford Air Training School aged 18, is convinced that, despite the sceptics, he will succeed this time.

"Age is just a number. I plan to bring an innovative, 21st Century approach to regional aviation and I also have an older, experienced team to call on," he said.

How old do you have to be to get a ATP in the UK? In the USA it's 21 I think. If not(the UK), are there any loopholes that made it possible for him to get it?
Now this is something I would pay to fly and see him actually do it. He reminds me of Clay Lacy(I wonder if he will be something like him later on in life?)

You need to be 21 Years old, you also need the 1,500 Hrs to unfreeze that too but he can fly the twin prop on a CPL which is ok.

I do hope that this kid and his business do very well. If I lived in the UK, I would work at Alpha1 or fly it as a passenger, but I would do so with reservations (not seat reservations, you know what I'm talking about).

You have a person who makes fiscal decisions as the boss, and now, as a pilot, will also be making operational decisions. That, in some situations (like- should I push the approach, or divert) can cause a conflict of interest. I hope as a captain he makes the decisions based on the safest option and not based on the cheapest option. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Again, I'm not a pessimist, I do hope he and his company succeed.

I think if he's smart enough to launch an entire airline plus he had a compnay at 15, he's not gonna mess around. I think this kid's a smart cookie, and he's gonna take every precaution when it comes to this venture, espically with the critics out there.

Michael Dell started Dell Computer at 19, Steve Jobs started Apple at 19, IKEA's founder started IKEA at 15, and all three of those are now world-leading companies. There are plenty of other examples of young entrepreneurs successfully launching enterprises that go on to become major corporations.

There are only a few business models with barriers to entry that are high enough to keep entrepreneurs like this out, examples being some utilities, banking, insurance and heavy manufacturing. Even these industries can be indirectly participated in by a young entrepreneur, in the form of stock investments, consulting, reselling, or other related services. Every other business is more or less fair-game.

So I think this airline could go places.

They are still confident of a launch later this year...but I've heard all that before.
BLK-IOM is a competitive market.
A2B fly the Shorts 360 and BNWA use the Navajo.
I don't know how long either will last, particularly with Jet2 now flying the Belfast route

Just looked on G-INFO UK register and the aircraft G-CCPW, is registered to:
KEEN LEASING (IOM) LTD
6 BRADDA VIEW, BALLAKILLOWEY
COLBY, CASTLETOWN
ISLE OF MAN
IM9 4BE
UNITED KINGDOM

So this aircraft is leased from Keen Leasing it seems.

This is really amazing! I hope it's successfull! Airlines require a lot of money to start up (obviously). I wonder if he's flying the flights because it's what he loves to do, or if he doesn't have enough funds to hire pilots and lease more than one plane. I'll definitely be watching his progress and I'll be interested to see what direction he'll go in if he turns a profit.

I hope to see it here in EDI and the EDI route has been well known. As i said in a previous post where the member ScottishLadie quotes me as wrong, well here is your proof!!!

I hope he does well and gets as far as Branson although B744's or A380's won't go down well @ IOM.

He's doing and done really well for himself so far and I wish him the best of luck.
He started with a company called ematch selling FS Scenery when he was about 16 I think it was.
Anyhow...great man and I'm sure he wont fail if he's determined which he is!

He did confirm to someone in my office that airport bosses had been talking to the guy, but now it seems he won't be stepping into the BLK-IOM market.
Incidentally, Monarch have been extremely successful from BLK.

I wonder. Is Keen leasing anything to do with FlyKeen? If so, FlyKeen used to operate BLK-IOM and BLK-BHD. These routes are now serviced by former FlyKeen directors by A2B Airlines, trading as British North West Airlines. (BNWA)

Perhaps the leasing arrangement prevent Alpha1 treading on BNWA's toes on this market? Pure speculation on my part, but interesting nonetheless.

A particularly bitter post from a 'captain' apparently with the leasing company providing the ac (J31 G-CCPW???) for the first flights today (yes, they were put back to December 14) appeared and disappered very rapidly on PPRUNE yesterday reporting that the leasing company had pulled the plug and walked away. I understand if the PPRUNE moderators are getting fed up with the amount of hot air vented on the subject there, but very intrigued by the amount and quality of information given.

Can anyone confirm/deny/update/infom any of the above? Is Keen Leasing?

Only a few hours to go... will IOM-EDI take off this morning? No mention of it on the IOM departures page. Why do I get that same feeling *again* ?
